Look up comments from the 1980's about the Reagan debt. Everyone thought 3.5 trillion was going to bankrupt the country. In 1992 Ross Perot ran a campaign about the debt. The Republicans won in 1994 based on controlling Government excesses. In fact the Republican Congress did end up getting a balanced budget by 1998
Money is based on a promise. Money is just a means of exchange of a promise traded for something in the future. People used to trade a goat for some rice. If the goat died the next day...the person with the rice got a better deal? Fiat currency is not an illusion any more than a futures contract is an illusion. It is a contract people enter into. There is no certainty of the future, just a speculation on the future. Capitalism demanded a way to borrow in the present against a hope into the future.
