Once you sift through much of the chaff in this thread there are actually some decent comments. I was emailed by two friends of mine today who are hard-core conservatives. One guy still has the knee-jerk reaction to any consideration of equal-opportunity etc, the other guy was certainly more generous in his comments regarding the speech. Perhaps most interesting was a link forwarded to me by another friend.... Charles Murray National Review http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=MjI3MWMyOGFkNmQ2MGFjNzRhYzYwMGVhZWJhMjcyOGM= Not exactly a place I hang out - note the menu selection "Liberal Facism". Lars Thorwald claims that he was able to look up in the Library of Congress the last speech written by a president or presidential candidate. That would be Nixon's Silent Majority speech on 10/13/69. "It is possible that we will have a President who not only will speak in full, complete sentences, but who will do so in a manner that is eloquent, and who will also be articulate and eloquent in delivering words he is intelligent enough to know, understand, and use in a speech he is capable of writing himself."
Rev Wright chooses to undue all that has been acheived by black people. He wants to keep them hating white people for the crime of slavery,,and never forget. He keeps them down by giving them permisiion to be a victim of white people. Funny how the rich white guy George Soros gave a huge amount of money to help Barrack Obama reach his goal. Wright is a white hater, and promotes his hate through his church.
I have only attended services at a predominately black church a few times in my life. I suspect that is also true for the majority of people posting to this thread. With that in mind, I think we should consider the likelihood that these fiery sermons are not received in precisely the same way by a black audience as they might be by an uninitiated white audience. There is a black tradition and culture involved here that most whites do not understand because the two races are still largely mistrusting of each other; and likewise, the harsher aspects of that tradition are perpetuated for the same reason. The best explanation of this I have seen comes from Rev. Joseph Lowery in this interview on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/03/19/brown.rev.lowery.cnn?iref=videosearch
You quote me above mistakenly. I was not referring to Obamas pastor Rev Wright in this quote. I was referring to the pastor featured in the video posted by ratboy... listen and see above for that video.
There are cultural differences with whites and blacks. These differences in how people express themselves can be misunderstood I agree. I don't think in this case that is what is being questioned. What is being questioned is the point blank admission of white hate and blaming of whites in the churches of some black people. The exact mentality that blacks want to change in racist whites is the exact mentality that is shown in some black churches. It is a double standard..and because of the terrible crimes that have been commiiteed against blacks in the past, are people suppose to ignore the racism and discrimination that blacks dish out to whites? If we are to believe Obama truely wants to end the gap between black and white, then this double standard should not be tolerated either. I live in mixed race neighborhood. I have family of mixed race. That would not be possible to live in harmony if the white hate and blame game that "some black" people in power want to perpetuate. There is a huge double standard happening. To ignore it would be to say it is ok to do.
A few points: It is not about RACE.....it is about CULTURE....drugs, violence, unwed mothers..etc etc.... Many Blacks are racists....they hate/dislike whites... Look at the African countries and their governments...constant strife/civil war.....NO WHITES involved.... Slavery: Let us not forget...other black tribes sold the slaves to the traders on the coast..... About me: I grew up in the 50"s in a segregated deep south environment....seperate water fountains...etc etc... I get along with blacks just fine...have done real estate transaction with several regular guys in the "hood"...but they know they can't intimidate me...but I am not a threat to their little fiefdom of power.... It is real funny to see two alpha black males in a discussion...each trying to out shine the other...I have been in real estate discussion with two black ministers, LOL....I couldn't keep a straight face as to who had the largest congregation and therefore most money.... They (Blacks) do not like the Spanish, as they call Hispanics, LOL...they simply hate Jews and Gays....gay black men are just shunned....same sex marriage is not even talked about... Blacks are becoming more conservative as they gain some economic comfort.....I just sold a tract of land to a black guy....he owns THREE MdDonalds....a hell of a lot more money than me....straight up regular guy...working for a living... Obama: He is a delusional liberal dreamer....he has offered no solutions to anything that I am aware of....just vote for me because I am not Hillary....has had no activities while in Senate to indicate he has any solutions or any ideas of any kind.... SteveD
Personally I believe this explanation that whites just don't understand black churches is nonsense. It's just another example of double standards where liberals and their favored groups are involved.
Its not that whites don't understand black churches, that is a cop out. The point is whites are sick of black churches that portray white people as the enemy and opresser of them. And some black preachers teach the black community that they need to overcome their opressors (white people) and rise above it all, and not hate their enemy (white people) . These teachings are allwoing black people to blame every cultural problem (drugs, gangs poverty...) on white people. What these preachers need to do is speak more of the immense changes that have taken place since days of slavery, and speak more of the opportunitys that black people have now compared to their slave ancestors. But I guess sometimes its just easier to blame someone else for the problems in balck communitys, than to make an effort to take advantage of the opportunitys available. Rev Wright speaks of how his black daughters do not have the opportunitys that Bushs' daughters and Clintons daughter have..becasue she is black. Well guess what, there are millions of white familys who do not have the money or connections that Rev Wrights daughters have. Do you see those white familys claiming Rev Wrights daughters are priviledged and advantaged by being the daughters of a famous black preacher?
