Barack Obama is among best presidents ever - George W. Bush not so much, say scholars in Siena poll

George W. Bush was no FDR, but Barack Obama could be.

That's the verdict of 238 of the nation's leading presidential scholars, who - for a fifth time - rated Franklin Delano Roosevelt the best president ever in the latest Siena College Research Institute poll.

In office for barely two years, Obama entered the survey in the 15th position - two spots behind Bill Clinton and three spots ahead of Ronald Reagan.

Obama got high marks for intelligence, ability to communicate and imagination, but his score was dragged down by his relative lack of experience and family background.

"Most of the presidents came from elite backgrounds, and he certainly did not," said professor Douglas Lonnstrom, who crunched the numbers. "He grew up without a father."

By contrast, Bush's dad was our 41st president, George H.W. Bush, who came in 22nd in the poll.

And yet, the scholars rated Dubya a dud as a president, ranking him in the bottom five at 39th place.

That's a steep drop from 23rd place, which is where Bush ranked when he entered the survey after his first year in office.

Bush got docked for saddling Obama with two bloody wars and a recession, and he got low marks for "ability to compromise, foreign policy
accomplishments and intelligence," according to the survey.

Only Warren G. Harding, who was 41st on the list, scored lower in the intelligence category.

FDR has topped each of the five presidential scholar surveys conducted by the Albany-area college since 1982.

His distant cousin, Theodore Roosevelt, came in second in the survey, followed by Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Lincoln's sorry successor, Andrew Johnson, was rated the worst president.

The scholars ranked the presidents on personal attributes such as integrity, intelligence, leadership and willingness to take risks as well as things they have little control over, like luck.

Washington was rated our luckiest president, followed by Teddy Roosevelt and Reagan.

Watergate-scarred Richard Nixon was ranked 30th overall, but finished dead last for integrity. Lincoln topped that category, followed by Washington and his successor, John Adams.

Jimmy Carter also ranked high for integrity, coming in seventh in that category. But overall, the scholars ranked two spots behind Nixon.

Jefferson, who was No. 5 on the list, was deemed our smartest president ever.
  2. Obama has only been in office 1 1/2 years ...and has 6 1/2 years to go :)

No doubt Obama will go down top 10,top 5 if he can keep a Democrat Congress and one of our greatest speakers Madam Pelosi
  3. Other polls show Liberal king FDR among the best and Bush among the worse

Lincoln Ranked Best President By Historians

WASHINGTON — Just days after the nation honored the 200th anniversary of his birth, 65 historians ranked Abraham Lincoln as the nation's best president.

Former President George W. Bush, who left office last month, was ranked 36th out of the 42 men who had been chief executive by the end of 2008, according to a survey conducted by the cable channel C-SPAN.

Bush scored lowest in international relations, where he was ranked 41st, and in economic management, where he was ranked 40th. His highest ranking, 24th, was in the category of pursuing equal justice for all. He was ranked 25th in crisis leadership and vision and agenda setting.

In contrast, Lincoln was ranked in the top three in each of the 10 categories evaluated by participants.

In C-SPAN's only other ranking of presidents, in 2000, former President Bill Clinton jumped six spots from No. 21 to 15. Other recent presidents moved positions as well: Ronald Reagan advanced from No. 11 to 10, George H.W. Bush rose from No. 20 to 18 and Jimmy Carter fell from No. 22 to 25.

This movement illustrates that presidential reputations are influenced by present-day concerns, said survey adviser and participant Edna Medford.

"Today's concerns shape our views of the past, be it in the area of foreign policy, managing the economy or human rights," Medford said in a statement.

After Lincoln, the academics rated George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman as the best leaders overall. The same five received top spots in the 2000 survey, although Washington and Franklin D. Roosevelt swapped spots this year. [/B]

I think you've got things mixed up a bit. Obviously Barrack Obama is the worst president in American History. That point is indisputable. Carter would be second worst, etc. Bush isn't even on the radar screen of bad presidents. Perhaps you've gotten your facts turned around somewhat.

And another thing, citing the Huff Post just makes you look even dumber if that is possible. I mean, you are making Joe Biden seem smart!
  5. The second poll was a CSPAN poll that was reported by Huff Post ,as well as FOX , Yahoo and many others

Since Bush left office 2 Presidential historian polls have been released,CSPAN and Sianna college. Both have Bush as one of the worse Presidents ever, because he was

No no, as I've said, you've got things all turned around.

George Bush was this two term president that did alright.

Barrack Obama is a one-term wonder who will be lucky to get out of office without facing a jail term. He is universally regarded as the worst President in US History.

You can make up all the phony data and polls you want but you will be unable to change the facts. You'll get a preview in November.

The more you go on about George Bush the more the rest of us realize you are mentally ill. A sychophant, an Obambatron with zero credibility. Your handle is as vacuous as your pointy little head.
  7. What did your psychiatrist diagnose you with ?
  8. What a fu(king farce.
obama won the nobel prize for essentially having white teeth and pretending to not be 1/2 white.

So no surprise academic dweebs think he's hot shit in this popularity contest.

Perhaps it would be best to read the methodology of the survey.

"The Siena College Research Institute (SRI) Survey of U.S. Presidents is based on responses from 238 presidential scholars, historians
and political scientists that responded via mail or web to an invitation to participate."
  9. I forgot about the Nobel Prize, another testament to Obamas Greatness as President
