Obama a poster child of affirmative action?

Discussion in 'Politics' started by Copernicus, Jul 15, 2009.

  1. Really? It has always been my sense that Affirmative Action was about allowing minorities with lesser qualifications access/admission "to whatever" because of their race. For example, the minimum SAT score for admission to a certain college might be "x" for non-minorities, but "x, minus 20%" for minorities.

  2. Your "sense" is incorrect...

  3. So you're saying.... AA applied to situations where there was KNOWN and ADMITTED racial bias against minorities? Who would admit that even if true?

  4. Since practiced racism is illegal, who would admit to practicing racism?

Who amongst drunk drivers who are not caught driving drunk (even while actually driving drunk) volunteer after the fact that they had violated the law and willingly turn themselves in to be charged with drunk driving?

Who among those who cheat on their taxes, if not caught then volunteer to the IRS they had cheated on their taxes?

So who among those who have practiced racism and discrimination on the basis of the color of someones skin would then voluntarily turn themselves in for acts of racism?

Racism is a fact of life, with the dominant racial group (whites) having a deep history of brutal racist acts against native Americans, African Americans, Jews, Catholics, the Chinese who worked building our railroads, Japanese Americans during WWII, etc.

The goal of AA is to give people of a minority status a chance they would not ordinarily get because of their situation (race being one they cannot change) did not afford them a genuine equal opportunity to try and grab the brass ring.

I spoke earlier about George Bush. He was given ever advantage by a very powerful and very connected family...who can question this?

Obama had no such family behind him to open the doors to higher education and political advancement.

He was given a chance, and look at what he has done with his chance. This chance would never have happened as little as 50 years ago, whereas the types of chances a bratty rich kid gets due to an accident of birth to wealthy and power parents are seen all the time.

Obama's basic poverty and racial condition was an accident of birth. Not having a powerful mother and father was his lot in life.

George Bush, a white guy who had a father who was the head of the CIA, a VP, a President, a wealthy oil man...got every possible break.

I see nothing at all wrong with both men being given a chance to pursue their goals, which they did.

The one born with silver spoon in his mouth became elected, and due to the evolution of our nation and programs like AA, the most common of men from humble beginnings, including a broken home achieved the same chance to run for office and was elected by the people of America.

  5. Wow, a surprisingly good thread.

Which actually started as a race baiting insult questioning Obama's ability to ad-lib by someone who is functionally illiterate at using basic english (at a grade school level, no less) ...

  6. ... and ends with OPTIONAL777 taking Scataphagos (aka gnome) to school on the basic practices of what instituionalized racism has done to the african-americans who live in this country.

I find it to be very extremely ironic that someone who claims to be leaving forever (with the requisite sendoff by all of his "ET frienemies") comes traipsing back in short order, spouting the same-old rhetoric and bullshit.

LOL, what was the point? :D

  9. My question remains unanswered... "How is AA accomplished"?

We know there has been AA in lending, so how does that work?

Let's say, the minimum FICO for a lender is 550. A non-minority has that and gets a loan. A minority has the same but does not get a loan? How does the lender justify that?

So is the AA doctrine "If the minority is equally qualified, he cannot be denied because of his race*"? Or, is it "because he is a minority, he must be given a loan if his FICO is 500"?

*This doesn't seem likely to me, as we already have anti-discrimination laws.

  10. You mean like this: Comiskey Park vs. “Cominskey Field” as Obama referred to it as.

Oh yeah...he's a genius from Harvard.
