Basic. Their english is good so it doesnt matter. It certainly a different language than spanish, but alot of times, you can have a vague idea of what they are saying as there is quite a bit of overlap.
Yes, my wife studied in Brazil so if we can't get Spanish subtitles she uses Portuguese and I find I can understand half of it.
