Now That Was A News Conference!

  1. So good, you know it was one person acting alone and not CNN. That's a start.

In his farewell address as president Tuesday, Barack Obama warned of the dangers of uncontrolled partisanship. American democracy, he said, is weakened “when we allow our political dialogue to become so corrosive that people of good character are turned off from public service, so coarse with rancor that Americans with whom we disagree are not just misguided, but somehow malevolent.”

That seems a well-founded worry. Partisan bias now operates more like racism than mere political disagreement, academic research on the subject shows. And this widespread prejudice could have serious consequences for American democracy.

The partisan divide is easy to detect if you know where to look. Consider the thinly disguised sneer in most articles and editorials about so-called fake news. The very phrase implies that the people who read and spread the kind of false political stories that swirled online during the election campaign must either be too dumb to realize they’re being duped or too dishonest to care that they’re spreading lies.

But the fake-news phenomenon is not the result of personal failings. And it is not limited to one end of the political spectrum. Rather, Americans’ deep bias against the political party they oppose is so strong that it acts as a kind of partisan prism for facts, refracting a different reality to Republicans than to Democrats.

Partisan refraction has fueled the rise of fake news, according to researchers who study the phenomenon. But the repercussions go far beyond stories shared on Facebook and Reddit, affecting Americans’ faith in government — and the government’s ability to function.

  2. It's a start to what? I hold CNN responsible for who it employs as well as their actions while under employment with that organization. I know accountability is a strange concept for you.

Tapper: "Irresponsible Journalism Hurts Us All," Understandable That Trump Would Be Upset

CNN's Jake Tapper reacts to President-Elect Donald Trump's fiery exchange with the network's Trump reporter Jim Acosta.

"It's irresponsible to put uncorroborated information on the internet. I can understand why President-Elect Donald Trump would be upset about that," Tapper said.

JAKE TAPPER, CNN: Well, there are two categories of news. Let me take on the first one that has to do with us. CNN. At the beginning of the press conference Sean Spicer, who is going to be the White House press secretary, suggested that both BuzzFeed and CNN publish this dossier full of uncorroborated rumors. that's not true. That's false. CNN never did that. We never provided even one detail from that dossier except this morning when I said that there was reason to believe that one detail that had been out there because of buzz feed was false involving Trump's attorney Michael Cohen. That conflation whether it's because Sean Spicer misunderstood or some other reason, that's not true...

When Mr. Trump went after our own Jim Acosta saying he is fake news and he isn't going to call for him, what I suspect we are seeing here is an attempt to discredit legitimate, responsible attempts to report on this incoming administration with irresponsible journalism that hurts us all and the media going forward should keep that in mind. That's one, just to get it out of the way.

WOLF BLITZER, CNN:You're referring specifically to BuzzFeed.

TAPPER: It's irresponsible to put uncorroborated information on the internet. I can understand why President-Elect Donald Trump would be upset about that. I would be upset about it too. It's why we did not publish it and why we did not detail any specifics from it because it was uncorroborated and that's not what we do. We are in the business of sussing out what is true and what is false.

That is called crazy spin... if what I read is true.

    1. That Trump was only provided and oral briefing.
    2. this material was not discussed.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ossier-report-Democrat-conspiracy-theory.html

If true, CNN made a false report about this fake report.
Which was followed by buzzfeed's revelation of the 35 page report.

Tapper tap dance is a really cute clintonian move... but its also fake news. But he is correct irresponsible journalism hurts us all.

    https://www.theatlantic.com/politic...-bombshell-report-does-and-doesnt-say/512747/

The latest twist comes from a bombshell report published early Tuesday evening by CNN, with four bylines, including Watergate legend Carl Bernstein. The story is unsettling, because it touches on suggestions that the Russian government might have compromising information about the president-elect. But the story is significantly more nuanced than that, and requires a careful parsing.

Here’s what CNN does say: When top intelligence officials briefed Trump last week on their conclusion that Russia interfered with the election to hurt Hillary Clinton and aid Trump’s presidential hopes, they presented him a two-page classified memo that included allegations that Russian agents say they have “compromising personal and financial information” about him. It is not, clear, however, whether U.S. intelligence officials believe those allegations to be true.

    CNN says:

These senior intelligence officials also included the synopsis to demonstrate that Russia had compiled information potentially harmful to both political parties, but only released information damaging to Hillary Clinton and Democrats … The two-page synopsis also included allegations that there was a continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government, according to two national security officials.

Trump: All I Can Ask For Is Honest Reporters

During his first press conference in 2017, the president-elect talked about the media's willingness to run with unsubstantiated stories.

DONALD TRUMP: I don't recommend reforms. I recommend people that are, that have some moral compass, you know. I've been hearing more and more about a thing called 'fake news,' talking about people that go and say all sorts of things, but I will tell you, some of the media outlets that I deal with are fake news, more so than anybody.

I could name them but I won't bother.

You have a few sitting right in front of us-- But they're very, very dishonest people, but I think just something we're going to have to live with. I guess the advantage I have is that I can speak back.

When it happens to somebody that doesn't have this, doesn't have that kind of a mega phone, they can't speak back. It's a very sad thing.

I've seen people destroyed. I've seen people absolutely destroyed, and I think it's very unfair. So all I can ask for is honest reporters.
