Nordstrom Closing Stores in Downtown San Francisco Amid ‘Rampant’ Crime https://www.thedailybeast.com/nordstrom-closing-stores-in-downtown-san-francisco-amid-rampant-crime Nordstrom is planning to close its two stores in downtown San Francisco, according to reports. The retailer’s chief stores officer emailed staff on Tuesday to say that “the dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market have changed dramatically over the past several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability to operate successfully.” The Westfield mall, where one of the stores will shut down, said in a statement: “A growing number of retailers and businesses are leaving the area due to the unsafe conditions for customers, retailers, and employees, coupled with the fact that these significant issues are preventing an economic recovery of the area.” The statement continued to urge the city leaders to “find solutions to the key issues and lack of enforcement against rampant criminal activity.” Read it at The San Francisco Standard

Businesses continue to flee San Francisco... San Francisco exodus gather pace: T-Mobile shutters flagship store after Nordstrom and Saks off Fifth shut-up shop https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...T-Mobile-exit-city-faces-business-exodus.html
Even before the pandemic, San Francisco had high rates of property crime: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime_rate #2 in larceny theft for the top 100 cities by population. Makes sense why nobody would want to open a business there with those stats.
Downtown San Francisco Target Plagued by Thefts, Workers Say https://sfstandard.com/criminal-jus...wn-san-francisco-target-sees-10-thefts-a-day/ A Downtown San Francisco Target store sees at least 10 thefts a day, according to employees who said products from cereal to nail polish and aluminum foil are regularly taken. It comes as the city deals with the impending loss of two nearby Nordstrom stores closing due to "unsafe conditions" and the recent news of Whole Foods shutting down at Market and Eighth streets. "I'd say 10 thefts a day," said one worker at the Target inside the Metreon, a mall near San Francisco's Union Square. The worker spoke on the condition of anonymity because they did not have permission from a supervisor to talk to the press. "Every 10 minutes you see it," another worker said who also did not wish to be named. "Look in some corner of the store, and you'll see people shoveling stuff into a bag—food, cosmetics." Multiple products are locked behind plastic barriers at the Metreon Target store, including shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes and beef jerky. When The Standard visited Monday afternoon, several security guards in bright yellow vests guarded the exit and wandered the store. (More at above url)
