Durbin Says W.House Pushed for Disputed Iraq Charge WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Democratic senator charged on Thursday CIA Director George Tenet told members of Congress a White House official insisted on including a disputed allegation about Saddam Hussein's push for a nuclear weapon in a presidential speech. The allegation by Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin was quickly denounced by White House spokesman Scott McClellan, who called it "nonsense" in the latest exchange on the issue between the Republican White House and Democrats on Capitol Hill. Durbin told ABC's "Good Morning America" program that Tenet told the Senate Intelligence Committee in a closed-door session on Wednesday that a White House official pushed for including a line about Iraq's attempt to get uranium from Africa in President Bush's State of the Union speech last January. "He certainly told us who the person was who was insistent on putting this language in which the CIA knew to be incredible, this language about the uranium shipment from Africa. And there was this negotiation between the White House and the CIA about just how far you could go and be close to the truth," Durbin said. McClellan responded: "I think that characterization is nonsense. It's not surprising coming from someone who is in a rather small minority in Congress that did not support the action that we took."
clinton was (is) a manipulator, an admitted liar, and a shameless opportunist. what does any of that have to do with what bush does?
Your cartoon, while humorous and clever, illustrated what I have been saying about the relentless attempts under way now to destroy this President's legitimacy and credibility for short term political gain, to hell with what it does to our security. To me, he is so far above the previous occupant of his office in these matters that it is laughable.
I'd like to see those "lies" and the proof that leads you to so casually label the President a liar. I've read everything on this thread, and I've seen nothing to substantiate those charges.
They are out to destroy the credibility of a president they don't believe credible. What the hell do you think politicians do? Laugh all you like, but the Repubs would do, and have done the exact same thing when they were out of power.
Great post. This is just why I said Tenet should have been replaced long ago. I don't doubt that he said this, in secret session of course, knowing that it would get leaked. No way Durbin makes this up. It also demonstrates why even a secret congressional review of sensitive intelligence matters is out of the question. These windbags are open sieves for disclosing sensitive intelligence materials. Quite a few of them, like Maxine Waters, could never get security clearance if they weren't in congress.
sure it mocks bush. note that it does so primarily by collecting various ridiculous things he himself has said and done. if he's going to pull stunts like the carrier landing and the john wayne-style taunts, someone's going to call him on it. as for a cartoon being a threat to "security," that's absurd. anyway, for the sake of balance, here's a bunch of pics attacking our favorite cigar afficionado: http://politicalhumor.about.com/library/blclintonpics.htm
