No room on hard drive

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by just21, May 18, 2005.

  1. windows probably realized you have more free space so it decided to use more for Virtual Memory.

if this is what happened, you can have windows auto adjust or you can set it yourself. either way, you obviously need more hard drive space.

I have turned off system restore and the cache on the hard disc. That should free up 2gb.

Some peer-to-peer software reserve disk space. Edonkey did it.

    Example:
3 movies at 10% (and each movie was 700mb) and had 1500mb left on my HD. Edonkey stopped downloading because I didn't have enough diskspace (because it reserved 3*700=2100mb on my HD)

  4. Your cache is using that space. You are running too thin. Get a new harddrive. You should always have at least 5% free to avoid problems with the windows cache and other applications. Spend the $60 and get a good harddrive.

  5. Buy a new hardware.

And stop pleasuring yourself, on Sunday nights.

I ran out of hard disc space again and started deleting files, went to defragment and looked at the report before starting the defragmentation. There were some log files that seemed to be used by IB TWS, named after different days of the week, in the Jts and IBJts directories. They ranged from 1gb to 7gb. I deleted them and now have 27gb free! They were too large to open. Anybody know what they are for?

  8. 1. run a virus/malware sweep to see that no malware is eating up your hard drive.

    2. make sure you have a small cluster size (4KB). run CHKDSK in command prompt to see your cluster size. if your partitions are larger than 8GB, convert them to NTFS.

    3. Turn off system restore, empty recycle bin, check the size of your temporary internet files folder to see that it's not to big.

    4. Make sure to configure Explorer to display hidden and system files. Once done, continue doing the following:

    5. delete all files in your temp folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp
If you are logged in under a username different than "administrator", then refer to the proper folder instead of "administrator".

    5. delete all the contents of the following folder: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
these files are un-necessary and take up a lot of space.

    6. in C:\WINDOWS, delete all folders that start with $. they look something like this: $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$. you can remove all of them.

    7. empty the recycle bin again.

    8. download FolderReports from here:
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/folrep.html
Run this program and sort the results by size, see which folders take up a lot of space. Most of the folder are needed for normal operation but some are not. Delete those that are SURELY not needed. if you don't know what is unnecessary, then ask someone who does, otherwise you may destroy your system.

    9. if all fails, buy a new computer.

    10. disclaimer: i take no responsibility for what happens to your computer, to you, or to anything else. however, it's supposed to work fine.

    so long
