The former Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador faced that decision about 20 years ago or so.

He was a Progressive and took a raft of sh#t for going to the US for medical treatment while promoting the glories of the Canadian health care system. He had a serious heart condition and went to Miami for surgery. And he flat out told the Canadians that he did not give up the right to seek the best care for himself just because he was Canadian. The Canadians howled like wolves- endlessly.

Meanwhile. He is still alive.

How long you think Dick Cheney would have lived under the Canadian health care system? Jeez, the guy has had multiple, multiple surgeries and treatment for -I dunno- sixty years or more, including a full heart transplant. The Canadians and the British NHS are not exactly peppy on providing care in the same decade that you may need it.
