They do in many countries. In Colombia any expat/retiree with a resident visa can vote in local/regional elections. Same in many, many countries.

If you pay your tax, you should get a say if only in the regional level.

There is a fair argument that visitors won't have enough cultural / historical understanding to make an educated vote at national level.

  2. Not necessarily so.

States have constitutions, and cities have no/none/el zippo status or authority under the law other than what is passed along to them by the state and the charter that created the municipality, which can revoked by the state.

There may be states where elections for foreigners/migrants/tourist longer than 30 days have been granted certain voting privileges but that may be because state law is different or that the practice simply has not been challenged.

In the case of New York, their law and constitution requires one to be a citizen. Whether a municipality which is chartered to carry out certain state authority at the local level - in the form of being a chartered, incorporated municipality, can confer more privileges than the state it self has- in that it is bound by their constitution- remains to be seen- in court.

And then there are federal/national legal issues as well.

It is all part of the larger scam that has the goal of granting so many privileges/rights to illegals that it really does not matter whether you are a citizen or not.

  4. The next step of course, if it is not being argued/implemented already is that, that non-citizens should be able to hold public office as long as it is a municipal office.

I mean, according to their logic, why should an illegal or a non-citizen be barred from being Mayor of New York?

And of course, there is no requirement that a U.S. Supreme Court Justice be an American citizen so that could a great job for an illegal too especially if they pack the court. Probably Kamala will want one justice from each of the Northern Triangle countries because, equity, colonialism, Che Guevera, whatever.

  5. Maybe a mexican sex trafficker, drug smuggler, or even a memeber of Isis will become mayor of NYC. Sounds silly but unfortunately within the realms of possibility.

Really? Because up until 1926 some states even allowed non citizens to vote in state elections. From a federal side of things, this practice has been going on for hundreds of years. It’s pretty well established. From the state side, you’re right. How the state’s organize themselves is their business and some do not allow for “home rule.” The New York situation is interesting in that this type of thing has been going on at the school board level for a while and nobody raises an eyebrow but now we are talking about real politicians and there’s some ruffled feathers.

We shall see. But like I said, weird shit. Should not be but we live in a quirky country where you can carry assault rifles in Target in some states so anything is possible.

You have just given up hiding entirely eh NY_Hood? Guess it's time for you to be banned again, what's this the fourth or fifth time?

By the way you were spotted by your very first post in politics with your thematic firearm-something_trader.

Maybe trader_bangbang next time to mix it up?

In so much that states allowed noncitizens to vote in state elections. As the law reads now, only federal elections are prohibited.

  10. MORE TO COME on some of this.

In an earlier discussion of this, maybe this same thread, I said that a sticking point for me is that you can call an election a "municipal or local election" but fifty percent or more of the operating budgets of some municipal programs/departments are funded with state and local funds. So you are letting non-residents exercise oversight/decisionmaking in regard to the disposition of state and federal funds.

I am not up for the full discussion. The issue is before us now and some things are in motion to force people to show where they stand on it, whether an upcoming election, or proposed legislation, etc. There are different layers to the discussion too. Some places like New York City are defining non-citizens just to include green card holders or others who are here legally such as legal refugees, or the like. San Francisco/Oakland and that crew, I think, want to include santuary city flat-out illegals. So those are different discussions.

Meanwhile, under the MORE TO COME heading, as I said, some people are going to get forced on to the record on this. Fine. Public officials should take a stand for better or worse. Elections coming up and all.

English/Español: Rubio Introduces Bill to Prohibit Foreign Citizens from Voting
    DEC 15 2021
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced the Protecting Our Democracy by Preventing Foreign Citizens from Voting Act to prohibit federal funding to states and localities that allow foreigners to vote. Senators Steve Daines (R-MT), Thom Tillis (R-NC), John Kennedy (R-LA), Rick Scott (R-FL), and James Lankford (R-OK) joined Rubio in introducing the legislation. Representative Jeff Duncan (R-SC) will introduce companion legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“It’s ridiculous that states are allowing foreign citizens to vote,” Rubio said. “However, if states and localities do let those who are not U.S. citizens to vote in elections, they shouldn’t get U.S. citizen taxpayer money.”

“Voting in this country is a right that should solely be limited to American citizens. Allowing non-citizens or illegal immigrants to vote, even if only in state or local elections, gives foreign nationals influence on some of the most important decisions impacting our families, our rights, and our representation in government,” Duncan said. “Non-citizen voting has the potential to exacerbate the border crisis and cause a greater erosion of confidence in our electoral process. Voting is the hallmark of our democracy, and non-citizen voting completely undermines election integrity. Non-citizen voting is not some sort of farfetched idea—it is currently allowed in New York, San Francisco, and even in the suburbs of our nation’s capital. I will not stand for this sort of globalist extremism that attempts to undermine what it means to be an American citizen. I am honored to work with Senator Marco Rubio on this very important effort to safeguard the security of our elections.”

“It’s simple—U.S. citizens should be the only people voting in U.S. elections,” Daines said. “Sadly, far-Left states and cities have moved to disenfranchise Americans by allowing non-citizens to participate in our elections. This must be stopped.”
