Multiple studies have shown that having a previous Covid variant case nearly useless for preventing an Omicron infection in the unvaccinated. Likewise being fully vaccinated with two doses (but no booster) provides a mere 30% effectiveness in preventing Omicron infection which is very low.

Now an additional study is out from the Medical University of Vienna published in Allergy showing similar results. The study "examined antibodies from either vaccinated or COVID-recovered people in Austria. And while tests confirmed that both prior infection or double vaccination provides protection vs. delta — a previous dominant variant — those same antibodies do very little to block omicron."

"However, an encouraging sign is that a third booster shot is the best way to achieve COVID immunity, per the results."

Study Claims COVID Immunity From Vaccination Or Prior Infection Offers 'Virtually No Protection" From Omicron

For the past two years, the world has been waiting for some type of COVID-19 immunity. Whether it comes from prior infection or inoculation, there have always been a number of different paths to achieve this — which could help signal the end of the pandemic phase.

However, a new study published in Allergy from the Medical University of Vienna offers grim results as the omicron variant continues to spread, saying that both initial dual vaccination and prior COVID infection virtually offer no protection against the highly transmissible variant.

No strain of COVID has been as contagious as omicron, as it continues to represent the lion’s share of infections around the world.

To gather the data regarding COVID immunity, study authors examined antibodies from either vaccinated or COVID-recovered people in Austria. And while tests confirmed that both prior infection or double vaccination provides protection vs. delta — a previous dominant variant — those same antibodies do very little to block omicron.

However, an encouraging sign is that a third booster shot is the best way to achieve COVID immunity, per the results.

Commenting on the results is Rudolf Valenta of the Medical University of Vienna, Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research, who said in a statement that the best solution to achieve COVID immunity and move towards normalcy is to develop a “broadly effective combination vaccine.” This type of vaccine would offer protection against both Omicron and all other previous versions of COVID.

Added Valenta: “Until we have such a vaccine, only repeated vaccinations with the existing vaccines will provide some protection. The protective effect achieved by vaccination can be evaluated with special tests that can be rapidly adapted to new virus variants.”
