based on energy content, the price should be 6 natty : 1 crude.

  2. Please excuse a first time poster for his ignorance, but is there still a true natural gas/oil relationship?

I know you can see the energy traders trading strips of each across the board, and often when oil rises or falls natural gas will follow somewhat erratically. My research in the EIA database shows only 1 true area of exchange - electrical generation.

Only 31% of electrical generators can switch between the 2 fuels, and then at a loss in generative capability. Oil fired generating plants that can switch from oil to natural gas generate only 9,170 megawatts, or 0.92% of total generating capacity. Switching those plants to natural gas reduces the net generated electricity to 8,817 megawatts. Natural gas fired plants are even worse. Natural gas fired plants that can switch to oil generate 54,135 megawatts, 5.44% of total generating capacity. Switching them to oil reduces their output to 15,358 megawatts. (All numbers from the EIA http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epa/epat2p9.html).

So this again begs the question, can you truly exchange one energy source for the other, and if not do they have a verifiable relationship?
