National Emergency

  1. Immigrants are no more likely to commit crimes than citizens.

Guns kill over 20,000 per year, 1200 of them children.

So which is the emergency ?

  3. People always see things one sided as good for them but don't realize they precedent they set for the next group to come in...

    George Washington's greatest quote:

"However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion."

    and

“The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty.”

  6. This is all one needs to know about is action standing up to judicial scrutiny:

"In Mr. Trump’s case, he is defining a longstanding situation at the border as an emergency even though illegal crossings have actually fallen in recent years. And unlike either of the Bushes, he is taking action after failing to persuade lawmakers to go along through the regular process."

By the time this gets to SCOTUS it will be an emergency. You think illegals will wait for the wall to be built?

I don't see how the fact that crossings have declined is relevant: there are still hundreds of thousands of apprehensions every year. Claiming that illegal crossings aren't a problem just because they were once at much higher catastrophic levels is like claiming a bull market is over because the price is rising less quickly than before.

As to the legal issues involved, there's a clear process here: Congress has the power to override Trump's declaration. And beyond that, it's up to the voters.
