I think he misunderstood your intent. He is from another culture and sometimes things are simply not taken the correct way. I know as i have lived in many different cultures. I understood you clearly and know that you mean't it as a compliment. He probally hasn't seen the patton film and therefore had no context to understand the statement about shoveling sh?t in Louisiana. Most reading this thread apparently haven't seen the movie because i was the only one who responded to your question and i didn't cheat either by googling it. But I am older and know more about Patton. My uncle fought with him in WW2 and i had a book written by and signed by his personal aide.
I agree, and I should have been mindful of that. I have been told that I have a quirky sense of humor. Very remarkable history of your uncle. Patton's history is a phenomenal one. Due to flat feet and colorblindness, I wasn't allowed to serve in the military, and I wish I was able.

County road 8 ....what that means about shoveling sh?t in Louisiana is that your life won't count for something insignificant..or mediocre. That you are doing something that counts for something.
