There's been a lot of banter on ET over time regarding volume and how (a) its useless, (b) its helpful.
For me volume is used to calculate trade size, eg turnover.
I don't bother with shit with small turnover, in other words, on a breakout I look for large trade sizes and you cannot calculate that without volume.

For me volume is a key bit of info in a breakout. E.g. is the price move on heavy volume?
Also volume feeds into my measure of liquidity which influences whether I do a trade or not.
    So for me it's (b) - helpful :-D

It's great to read this themickey. This is the way I have been drifting with the automation - using it not to do the whole thing but to support me in discretionary trades by coralling all the data into the insights I need. My tech is a mysql db with a bunch of java pipeling data in and out of it from various free APIs. I need to get more into googlesheets as the interface between my back system and my discretionary self. Interested in Iress - how different is it to e.g. Amibroker or TradeStation? I thought Iress was more for institutions.

With IRESS I havent fully explored it, it covers many things, broker interface (ie you can trade from IRESS platform but I don't), Charting, DOM, Announcements and a bunch of other stuff, but I've forgotten about.
The way I use it, I have one page open only on a large portrait monitor and watch streaming data for the top turnovers in Nano Cap, Micro Cap, Small Cap and Medium Cap stocks.
I dont bother with large Cap a (a) Not enough room to view (b) I tend toward emerging type stocks rather than the very big ones. The ASX differs from USA, we don't have the fliers like Tesla etc.
So IRESS is not an algo creating platform where you can code in stuff, its really more live streaming information source with charts (I dont use their charts).

So I have this one page open day after day, that's all I use IRESS for, for the same thing and nothing else.
However I have 3 laptops running, the other two run algos, the third runs IRESS plus I can see my stocks on another monitor.
As well, a tablet, I use that too.

Great to see it themickey. Kudos re the small caps but I'm staying away from that stuff for a while. I've had my ass burned pretty bad by a couple of those! I'm sticking to S&P for the foreseeable because a. it's liquid, b. I am hopefully less likely to get my ass burned quite as bad and c. I just want to stick to one thing. I've messed around with different strategies- I want to dig deeper into one.

Definitely the larger the cap more safe.
I've noticed that on a strong mkt day, majority of large caps will turn green, whilst small caps... - 1/3 green, 1/3 red, 1/3 do nothing.
But its a numbers game again, just one small cap going gang busters can make huge profits.
The secret is in being very careful and often waiting long periods of time for a) Finding a contender b) allowing it to play out.
But small caps trading will drive a trader insane way quicker than large caps.
(Prolly that's whats wrong with me) :)

Hey userque you sure you can get intraday at tiingo? I had a look at their API and it looked like just EOD.

I'll double-check and report back after the market closes.

EDIT: I'm sure ... I'll just find a link for you.

Right you are! I'll give that a go. I'm working off EOD data in principle but there are some things I want to code up such as watching my positions and watching certain stocks for a move. Thanks.
