From an older post of mine on this thread: If I were to use LEAPS, at least I would buy deep-in-the-money LEAPS. ... I don't want to sound discouraging, and I respect your opinion, but please make sure that you understand your risk under all possible market conditions, considering the adverse movement of both price and implied volatility over the life of your position. Check out these links: calendar spreads (your LEAP play is a calendar spread) LEAPS LEAPS LEAPS LEAPS LEAPS LEAPS Hope it helps.
You're exactly right, if you don't set an objective, you'll never know if you've won or not. I've been torn between, guarding profits versus, letting winners ride out, which seems to be the standard advice for stock purchases. With options, I've finally concluded, its more important to guard profits, because of the time-value degradation. Last trade I considered, (Unfortunately, I couldn't trade because I vow not to), Friday; long WFR at 44.50, March 45 Calls @ .20. Would have bought 30, high price on the day was 1.50. Perhaps I can make this happen.
cnms2............i agree in the money is better but those options with volatility underlying are too expensive for me..........but i still agree in the money is better or at least at the money......... a pure straddle.............time is my friend......but not if option is based on dead stock........dead stock allows inexpensive leaps usually but i dont' like the long term hope of movement........i would rather step into current movement such as intc...........

pattersb, if you think $600 is too much to blow off in 1 day, may be you could try just 10 next time? The profit would still be respectable.
