    The guys over at the AVS forum have a messageboard just for making home theater PCs. They are extremely picky about how much noise they want their PCs to make, so there are alot of good ideas on here to make your PC quieter if you want to dig around.

    Also check out www.quietpc.com . They sell quiet fans etc. I have never bought anything from them

    Thanks for the response. I found the solution, incidentally from a link posted in this or another thread regarding quieting your PC.

    Under this link at the bottom half of the very lengthy page is a section on using software to change your cdrom speed.

    In particular, I am using the Nero Drive Speed that is listed there as freeware. Actually I have this program, didn't know they could do that! Now my 40x (I though it was 24X but that was record speed) can run at a silent 4X!!!
