Complete nonsense. There's a setting on their software which allows the administrator to adjust the length of time that the "active users" are calculated from so those numbers are basically meaningless. So the active users could be from the last 10 minutes, the last 10 hours, the last 2 days, etc.
Those were not my numbers Baron... but my quote was in the post because of someones cut an paste.... What numbers do you look at? New posts per day/month? Number of posts month to month? New registrations? Great subject!
The idea was never dropped. As soon as I implemented the software with the self-moderation capabilities, people were instantly crying for the "old ET" to come back because of some lost posts and other migration problems. You have to understand that moving to an entirely new model of moderating user's own threads and the implementation of other requested advanced features are not "bolt-on mods". This means that almost all of the old underlying code has to change, and virtually nothing is going to behave in the exact same way as it used to. It's going to be a clusterfuck of changes no matter how you look at it. It's like building a brand new interstate without any inconveniences to existing drivers and roads... it's just never going to happen. So change is coming, but I can tell you right now that it's not going to be pretty.
As of now ET has: Total Threads: 201,335 | Total Posts: 3,351,803 In 1 day I will post the new numbers for an accurate count. And maybe post the thread/post count 1 week from now.
According to BMT they have 5,260 posts this month. So far we've had 13,490. Considering their claimed higher number of users online, I will let you guys figure out the explanation for that
I haven't read this entire thread but I will say that ET is one of the easiest forums to navigate around and find the information you need....yeah I may bash ET from time to time..but it's still tops in "look and feel" Any changes you make should be "small tweaks here and there" and "rolled out over time"....even if you have to custom code the underlying software
This is what vBulletin 5.0.4 looks like. The color scheme they are using looks very modern, while ET has that 1990's look. Also the "Join us on Facebook" link is a good idea. http://www.vbulletin.com/forum
When I stumbled upon this thread, it was 84 pages long and I thought wow, the community is really into this. Well, I've read every post, mulled over whether to say my piece (given that the decision appears to have been made), and decided I should because it would be pointless moaning about what ET becomes later if I do not state my position now. I am opposed to self-moderation on a point of principle. Freedom of expression is too precious to be subject to the caprice of assorted individuals. Yes, I appreciate the overwhelming sense of frustration with Surf and his ilk, if indeed there are any quite like him here. The solution to his behaving like an absolute idiot is to deal with him, not for the managers of this site to abrogate their responsibility. Imagine anti-social behaviour taking a grip on your city, with acts of vandalism commonplace, where walking on the street means you are subject to harassment and verbal abuse. Then the mayor comes on TV and tells you he quite understands your frustration, so from now on you can deal with the problem as you see fit. I don't see that as the way things should be done. I have also seen the complaint that this thread has been derailed by Surf. Really? Last time I checked it takes 2 hands to clap. Why wrestle with the pig and then complain when you get dirty? We have something special here, where we can all speak our minds without self-censorship or concerns that we may end up banned for doing so. It is our responsibility to exercise that freedom within the bounds of reason. When we have a member who abuses that freedom, repeatedly and constantly, the solution must be to deal with that member and NOT to restrict freedom of expression. Do that, discard that which is good, and we allow the troll to change the fundamental nature of this community. I don't know about you all, but the mere thought of that leaves me feeling dirty and used.
Interesting, I agree with your premise. But how does marketsurfer derail threads? I really don't understand the animosity toward that alias. His value add is tremendous when compared to his detractors. Please enlighten me with specific examples of your claims. Thanks. Surf
