letting in a "third column" is not the way to preserve national identity. the idiot Brits until recently were not concerned with a muslim refugee invasion but were upset about skilled and semi-skilled Eastern Europeans, members of the EU, taking away middle class British jobs.
Realistically, this is one half of the argument. Unfortunately, when someone brings up the "other half" of the argument, they are constantly shouted down as "xenophobic" or worse.
Agree! A very good point indeed! It all depends on how many years away! And who will be the labour workers for building those robots! The country wanting to control its know-how and technology advancements would still require skillful workers, both physical and knowledge ones. That's why econometric modelling is So important!
We would have to have a little bit of faith and confidence in our government for handling/managing/resolving this sort of issues/problems! Isn't it?
Yes, but I think its a matter of compounding, like in trading. First you make robots, who make more robots, and then those robots can make the stuff we need. Of course you still need lots of jobs to put it all together, monitor it, and all that jazz, but even getting rid of the bottom 10% of jobs will be incredibly destabilizing. These are the jobs most immigrants would typically take when resettling into a new country. I think when peak labour hits, which is very close I believe, then its all down hill from there. Just today I read about how the insurance industry will go into a downturn because autonomous cars will require so much less insurance since accidents will drop by 90%. Every industry is going to be hit. There are also multiple examples of fast food restaurants operating with less and less employees, which, once again, are jobs taken by immigrants. Even a 5 year time line is I think problematic. By then, autonomous cars along with autonomous trucks might be online. Then we just have to watch where the chips fall. The housing crisis came about because what, 7% of the people defaulted on their loans and those investments went bust? So imagine just a few of these low skill sectors going bust, and same thing with the knock-on effect.
the welfare states of Western Europe are running out of money. in the old days immigrants received no support from the State. it was work or support from relatives to survive. as margarete thatcher use to say socialism is system that spends other people's money until they run out of money. then the game is over. that is Western Europe today. the US is going down down the same path. it is a ponzi scheme. a collapse is a matter of time.
Probably we wouldn't know the future development for sure. Just like the paperless office, nowdasy I can still see the supermarkets selling a huge number of printing paper packs. Cars cannot completely replace trains/rails. New fast speed trains get even better and more comfortable. The Internet cannot stop/eliminate people going to office daily for works. When robots owns the world, it would perhaps create a whole new streams of entertaiment industries, because people don't work anymore, however time must be killed somehow someway. The future entertainment industry and its varieties could still demand a new generation/specrum of labour jobs. Such as singer, comedian, painter, chef, designer of robots, aethstetic designer, hairstyle designer, cloth/fashion designer, house/interior designer, make-up artists, film maker/producer, actor/actress, opera singer, pianist, fire fighter, body trainer, pet nursing, etc. etc.
really no hedgemony power has succeeded without immigration and assimilation of various cultures and different ideas.
How many books do you think we should read first before getting into details for further discussion on this Complex fiscal economic topic? A simple way to look at it is it's just a figure, as long as some other countries trust your country's earning ability, accumulated assets, and net worth value in the future. Both national scale, and ownership per capita. The US alone may be poor for now, but its citizens altogether is very very rich, and growing faster than before!
What other half? If you let people in that will add value, you will reap the benefits. It all boils down to incentives - if immigrants need to work hard to make it, you'll work hard. If we incentivize immigrants to assimilate, they will complain but assimilate.
