Most number of days up or down

Discussion in 'Trading' started by Ialwayslearn, Jan 3, 2009.

  1. What, historically, are the most number of consecutive days up and the most number of consecutive days down for the following?

    Dow
    Nasdaq
    SP500
    Russell 2000

This can be day over day or open versus close.

    Thank you for the help!

dont have answer i would guess 28 days..but heard of a day trader who was profitable for 30 straight months without a losing day.

  3. Welcome dmk.

I was referring to gains or losses for the INDEX, not an individual trader's profitability.

    I don't have the stats but I know I've seen some 7 - 8 day stretches.

  5. The most since July 2008 was 8 down days in a row which started in early october i think....

  6. There was a thread where we discussed this a while back. I found a blog post discussing it with some numbers. I'll look back through my old posts and see if I can find it again.

  7. Just did a spreadsheet for last 10 years on S&P. One occurrence of 9 up days in a row (ending 11/05/04). Three occurrences of 8 up days (11/04/04, 9/4/03, 3/21/03). Seven occurrences of 7 straight up days, 17 of 6 straight up days, 35 of 5 up days, and 78 of 4 up days. These "up days" were defined as closing higher than opening.
