What, historically, are the most number of consecutive days up and the most number of consecutive days down for the following? Dow Nasdaq SP500 Russell 2000 This can be day over day or open versus close. Thank you for the help!
dont have answer i would guess 28 days..but heard of a day trader who was profitable for 30 straight months without a losing day.
Welcome dmk. I was referring to gains or losses for the INDEX, not an individual trader's profitability.
There was a thread where we discussed this a while back. I found a blog post discussing it with some numbers. I'll look back through my old posts and see if I can find it again.
Can't find that blog post I found before (maybe I didn't post it after all), but I found this article on consecutive up days in the Dow. The most is 13. It gives statistics on as few as 5 up days in a row: http://www.stockhouse.com/Blogs/ViewDetailedPost.aspx?p=17788
Just did a spreadsheet for last 10 years on S&P. One occurrence of 9 up days in a row (ending 11/05/04). Three occurrences of 8 up days (11/04/04, 9/4/03, 3/21/03). Seven occurrences of 7 straight up days, 17 of 6 straight up days, 35 of 5 up days, and 78 of 4 up days. These "up days" were defined as closing higher than opening.
