  1. Obama first mantained and is now cutting defense spending

I would rather a guy maintain and cut then a guy who massively increases spending like Bush did

    Bush 88 %

    Obama 7.2 %

Romney Calls for More Defense Spending

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — Standing among retired airplanes on the U.S.S. Yorktown, a decommissioned World War II aircraft carrier, Mitt Romney told a small group of veterans on Thursday that given the global threats to America’s interests, the nation’s defense spending should be increased instead of cut.

Acknowledging that waste and excess spending exist within the Defense Department, Mr. Romney still called for increasing the Pentagon’s budget.

“Over the last few years we’ve had a defense budget, excluding the cost of warfare, at about 3.8 percent of the economy, about 3.8 percent of the G.D.P.,” he said. “I’d like that be a little higher, at about 4 percent.”

The campaign appearance came a day before Mr. Romney is scheduled to deliver a foreign policy speech at The Citadel, the military college in South Carolina.

Walking the audience through a changing world dynamic — he mentioned an Iran that is seeking a nuclear weapon to “blackmail the world,” a North Korea “rattling its nuclear saber,” a rising China and the growing threat of jihadists — Mr. Romney talked Thursday about the need for a strong military.

“And so with all those changes, you would think the president and the people in Washington would recognize the importance of the United States military, and the need not to shrink our military, but to strengthen it,” he said. “And yet the president and Congress have recently put in place a process whereby we might see the military budget shrink by hundreds of billions of dollars.”

Mr. Romney added: “My view is we cannot and should not shrink the scale of the United States Department of Defense budget.”

  3. le sigh, reducing the deficit doesn't help. producing a balanced budget does! budget deficits=endless interest payments. endless interest payments=your money going towards nothing!

stop wasting time and energy looking at the amount of the deficit. there should be NO deficit! The trillions of dollars of debt we have is such a huge problem. the DEBT needs to be reduced, NOT the deficit. what are sensible arguments against that? any arguments against producing a BALANCED budget and reducing the DEBT are purely political and have no basis in reality (but keep in mind, the government does not want anyone to have any concept of reality).

  4. True, but a President cutting 1.5 trillion in spending in 4 years will effect so many people that he would have no chance at getting re elected

  7. Wallet

    Wallet

You realize your chart misconstrues the facts, Obama increased 7.2% over an 88% increase .... if judged from the same starting point he'd be at about 96%

The CBO deficit scores are tainted math, again they are reductions in future spending that never really existed. The hard cold facts are the actual deficit increases every year because we spend more than we take in......

I guess the democrats are still living in 2008 and still running against Bush

  10. That is not correct

Bush took a 128 billion dollar budget surplus and turned it into a 1.4 trillion dollar deficit

Obama took a 1.4 trillion dollar deficit and has made it lower 2 out of 3 years and it is currently less then a trillion...500 billion less then Bushs last budget
