More Support for Infrequent Whole-Body Workouts

  1. I bench 400 raw for two at 50yo. I do basic splits with the only isolation being the occasional bicep curl.

  2. The gradual approach sounds reasonable. Almost doable. Who knows, I might even give it a go in the summer. The thing is, if you look it up online, there seem to be as many arguments for it as against it. So what’s a boy to do?

  3. Those are big numbers. What does your weekly routine look like these days, and do you find you can handle as much volume and/or frequency as, say, 10 years ago?

  4. Heavy squats on day 1. Heavy chest/tris on day 3. Heavy DLs and overheads on day 5. Weekends are typically off.

I fly too much to maintain the frequency and rep load, but it would be impossible to do so a decade later. I always book hotels with large gyms. The Waldorf uses Technogym machines which are excellent, but of course I'd prefer cages/racks.

Apparently Carrot Top (Scott something) lives in the residences at the WA. We were both working out in the WA fitness center last weekend. Dude is strong for his size/age.

  5. What’s your opinion of the article(s) I posted in this thread? I gather you don’t exactly agree since you do a split routine, but I’m curious about your take on the subject.

I remember Carrot Top being a skinny guy who became fairly jacked. He claims never to have taken steroids. That seems unlikely. Also, in some photos I saw a while back, it looked like he was injecting Synthol into his shoulders, unless the pics were photoshopped. Thoughts?

  6. lol he claimed that? We were talking about gear while working out. He doesn't look like he's on anything (currently) other than perhaps mild HRT.

    I haven't read the article.

  7. I know the guy is a celebrity and remember seeing his act (fairly entertaining) on late night talk shows years ago, but I had no idea his NW is reportedly estimated at $75MM. (Seriously?) I should have studied comedy in school.

  8. Yeah, the number is misleading as that's his contract pay to date which includes his current contract. IOW he will have been paid $75MM gross when his contract expires in 2025 or whatever. So it's pre-tax but he's been a headliner much longer than Celine Dion has had her residency.

  9. Dude does 300 shows a year for $5MM pa. Amazing work ethic, but I'm not into the prop comics. I know he doesn't rely on that stuff but it's not my thing. I have two tickets to his show, any date (front row reserved) if anyone wants 'em.

  10. Back to the topic at hand. Despite my having reduced my workout frequency from twice a week to 3 times every 2 weeks a few months a go, a couple of my joints have been increasingly vying for attention, and my sleep has become somewhat fractured. Admittedly, I'm under a bit more stress these days, but that's just life.

And so, I decided yesterday to reduce my resistance workout frequency to once a week. Again. I've done it before for well over a year, as I reported in the past, and didn't seem the worse for wear. I recall being better rested and having less joint awareness. I will just have to be a little more conscious of my caloric intake, which I was planning to do anyway. Working out only once a week should make that easier. My workout will continue to be 10 hard compound sets to true failure plus a set of calf raises, followed by about 5-6 minutes of ~HIIT. I will, once again, do an additional ~HIIT workout, perhaps adding a minute to it, during the week.
