If it was just teens being arseholes there is a chance. Remember that German, Italian and French antifascism (resistance) were allies of the allies. The German antifa were fond of the USSR but..were on the same side as those soldiers. French resistance in the middle there. It would be fair to say that the revolutionary antifascists of the time were not fans of capitalism as well as fascism, they rejected any authoritarianism and capitalism was an arm of German fascism (the Nazis were not socialists, or they would have stayed friends with the USSR) but counterrevolutionary or conservative antifascists were more pragmatically about resisting fascism and restoring the line between government and corporate power. Don't get me started on the Judean People's Front.
What is very odd about this vandalism in Charlotte is their reference to a very specific event. From the article "Somewhere between Sunday evening and Monday morning, it was defaced with references to communism, including a hammer and sickle and the words: “Glory to the day of heroism June 19, 1986.” The phrase is a reference to a prison massacre in Peru, in which some 224 people were killed by the military after a series of riots." This cemetery is away from the protest/looting downtown areas of Charlotte as far a I can tell. It is in an area with mainly Hispanic immigrants from my understanding of the city --- but very few of those immigrants are politically driven... and most of the immigrants from South America are two generations+ in the U.S. (and legal) -- they came during the Reagan era. And I also would expect that if it really had a Peru connection the graffiti would be in Spanish and why target a WW2 cemetery monument . The entire thing seems odd. Nearby Eastway Middle School has the following demographic information - "Minority enrollment is 96% of the student body (majority Hispanic), which is higher than the North Carolina state average of 52%." I did not see that bit, indeed interesting. Sorry, I'm prone to skim Fox. Sounds more and more like stupid teens. Though I live in South America and even occasionally give talks at a university so see the fresher's confused Marxist etc. graffiti every year, I find the political history of South American nations so hard to grasp as it really is like that Monty Python sketch. I expect this at least tangentially has something to do with ex Peruvian president Alan Garcia's suicide due to his involvement with Odebrecht, a massive bribary scandal affecting most South American governments. He was regarded as a fascist by many, allied with the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht against the interests of the citizens and there was some hard government pushback against people who did not like this. If it is from Perú.. Its all very alien to Western white nationalism fascism or antifascism. I can imagine some kids with a half a grasp of Peruvian history doing something daft and not having a clue of the meaning of the memorial. Hopefully we will find out soon. At least it was paint, can be cleaned.
Peru has a statue erected for the most destructive figure in its history: https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/francisco-pizarro-statue Peruvians aren't digging the sauce though and it has been moved several times.
Colombia is named after Colombus who never even came here. Oddly last time I was in Cartagena I was shown a jewel they said was given by Pizarro to a family when on his way to Panama I think. One thing every South American I know would agree that the conquistadors were a bunch of utter psychos who could not be trusted as far of that room of gold Pizarro ransomed the Incan ruler for and then killed him anyway could be thrown. Even the king back in Spain thought that was excessively dirty business.
As the title of this thread mentions targets. The confederate Civil War statues went up during the period this was a thing. More detail in the link. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/racist-carnival-game/ Was a Violently Racist Carnival Game Once Popular in America? In the not-so-distant past, white carnival goers threw eggs or balls at African Americans in a game popularly known as "Hit the N----- Baby." DAN MACGUILL PUBLISHED 26 FEBRUARY 2018 Image via CURAphotograph/Shutterstock.com Claim "Hit the Nigger Baby" was once a popular attraction at fairgrounds in the United States. The history of the United States is both scarred and partly defined by racial subjugation and violence, a legacy with an almost endless litany of horrific incidents and phenomena. In February 2018, many thousands of Americans were confronted — some for the first time — with images of a once-popular fairground game with the extremely offensive name shown below: <!– –> This image is authentic and shows a 1942 YMCA brochure for Camp Minikani, a children’s summer camp in Wisconsin. “Hit the Nigger Baby” (also known as “The Black Dodger” or “Hit the Coon”) was a common fairground game in which players hurled objects (usually eggs or baseballs) at African-American people serving as human targets. According to the Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University, “It sounds like a common carnival target game, but there was one unsettling part of the game, namely, the game’s target was a real live human being, a ‘negro’ human being.” In our research of newspaper archives, we found evidence of the game’s being staged as early as the 1880s, and as recently as the 1950s. In several instances, the stand received top billing in newspaper bulletins promoting upcoming carnivals and fairs, along with the shooting gallery and fish pond. In July 1948, a “soldiers reunion and homecoming” held in the public square in Brownstown, Indiana, was advertised in the Jackson County Banner with the exhortation “Make this big week your vacation time — Bring the family — meet old friends — Hit the ‘Nigger Babies’ — Eat Hot Dogs — Join the Fun.”
We have CHAZ in Seattle --- now rioters are trying to create BHAZ right near the White House. DC protesters try tearing down Andrew Jackson statue at Lafayette Park, set up 'BHAZ' near White House https://www.foxnews.com/politics/andrew-jackson-statue-bhaz-washington-lafayette-park Protesters on Monday tried toppling a statue of Andrew Jackson near the White House, while sealing off an area in an act of defiance similar to events in Seattle by declaring off-limits an area dubbed the "Black House Autonomous Zone," or "BHAZ." Police intervened as chants of “Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Andrew Jackson’s got to go" were heard while a rope was put around the bust of the seventh president riding a horse, the Washington Post reported. Hundreds of protesters locked arms around the statue before police officers removed the crowd in a chaotic scene. U.S. Park and D.C. police used a chemical irritant to disperse the crowd and officers were hit with objects. Jackson, who has faced ire in the present day for his severe treatment of Native Americans, was the latest historical figure targeted by protesters demanding monuments and memorials to those with racist pasts be taken down. Fox News has confirmed that the U.S. Secret Service asked reporters to leave the White House grounds nearby. The specific reason wasn't clear. Nearby, videos circulating online showed people around Lafayette Park carrying wooden boards and fencing in an attempt to declare the autonomous zone. Orange and white barricades -- originally erected by police -- were moved from a church and added to others to make them longer. Protesters were seen overturning trash bins and dragging a chain-link fence across a road to erect more barricades. A Fox News crew was escorted from the area and told by protesters to stay away. The historic St. John's Episcopal Church, often called the Church of the Presidents, was vandalized with "BHAZ" spray-painted on its pillars. The church became the center of controversy earlier this month when President Trump posed for a photograph in front of the building after police cleared out protesters. The efforts by protesters were similar to those in Seattle who carved out the "Capitol Hill Organized Protest," or "CHOP," in the city's Capitol Hill neighborhood more than two weeks ago. City officials announced Monday that steps were being taken to dismantle the cop-free area after a series of shootings and other violence within the area. If you think your post is the dumbest in ET history you have not seen many posts. To be fair it might be close.
I am biased. In a war between USA and its enemies, I consider people who fought on the side of USA as heroes, and not the others. I reiterate my recommendation to move all the Robert E Lee statues to Vladivostok/ Pyongyang/ Qom
