Mining stocks vs underlying commodities

If we are assuming future recovery coupled with inflation, are you better off in mining stocks themselves such as BHP or in a commodity index such as the Dow Jones AIG Commodity Index?

I'd really appreciate it if somebody could answer my quesiton...

 

Mining stocks profit margins should be better now that energy prices have come down.

 

ETF's, indexes and mutual funds are less volatile than individual stocks.,, and individual stocks are more susceptible to bad news.
