dont forget S&P companies profits have been rising double digits for the past few years, while average worker wages have been largely stagnant (especially adjusted for inflation).

I'm not saying that the S&P companies shouldn't win, but more a question of how much. If left to their own devices, I don't think S&P companies are concerned about the working man's wage.

  2. The sad fact is, that with the degree of illegal labor in this country, that the hike in the minimum wage will only make the illegals willingness to work wages under that level that much more competitive.

However, a signed bill of this nature will almost assuredly guarantee wage inflation (by design) which will ensure future fed hikes, as wage inflation is the most feared type of inflation of all by the fed, as wages in keyensian philosophy are typically 'sticky'.

Leaving well enough alone might have been the better choice, but now that it is a political football, the republicans have outsmarted the dems and found a way to either get their estate tax repeal, or to point their fingers at the dems and say, "we were willing to get you your minimum wage increase, but you gave it up."

  5. Can anyone tell me what the latest economic and/or business achievements in New Zealand are? LOL! How about Australia?

The history of the US is that it "was" the land of opportunity. The idea was not to guarantee a "minimum" wage. It was to give the opportunity to achieve whatever you might imagine.

Unfortunately, I say "was" because in my lifetime I have seen that opportunity erode to a degree because the citizens of the US don't seem to realize the advantages they have over places like Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Europe, etc., and therefore we have been infected by Europeitis and all of their socialistic attitudes that lead absolutely no where economically.

The question you have to ask yourself is where does that guy making $10 an hour in New Zealand get a job? And once he has it, where does he go from there?

In the US there is no limit on what one can achieve....but if he wants to he can sit around on his ass earn minimum wage. I have no sympathy at all. It's not what this country is about.

  7. Of course it is a starting point. That's why they call it the minimum wage.

Have you actually seen the figures on how many adults and heads of families? I have--and it's not just teenagers who work 40 plus hours a week in grueling jobs just to live in abject poverty.

I do know many hard working adults who make the minimum wage. You might wonder how they make it.

Well, they don't. They have to work two full-time jobs; they don't get to see their kids much; they don't have health insurance, and it shows.

  8. my view for what its worth (lol..probably not much to most of you) si that we live in a free market society.....the fact is there should be no minimum wage at all.....the market should make the minimum wage...not congress or gov't......why should a company be forced to pay employees 10 dollars an hour when someone would do the work for 1 dollar an hour???

Just like this absolutley retarded idea of the US gov't to consider "windfall" taxation to oil companies. Is the gov't gonna give those windfall taxes back in 5 years when the oil market tankes like it always does? No. If we want to be communists why dont we all move to China?? Companies should be able to charge the highest price for their product that they get and pay the lowest wage to their employees that they can. that is what a free market is all about. And yes the rich get richer and poor....well lets face it.....who cares about the poor. If they wanted to be not poor then they should open a business and pay low wages and charge high prices just the rich did. These minumum wages and windfall taxes and any other socialist ideas just breed laziness and a country of overweight undereducated whiners like 3/4 of the US. Maybe if we stop hand feeding the masses and forced them to work for their money people may have a desire to apply themselves to get ahead instead of relying on free handouts.

Obviously these are just my own humble opinions.....based solely on the fact that im a capitalist who thinks if you're whining because your job only pays you minimum wage that you should maybe consider getting off your ass....quit whining....and find or invent a way to make money instead of relying on someone else spoon feeding you.

What college did they go to?

    What career did they choose?

Why do they have kids if they cannot afford to have kids?

  10. Do you know ANYTHING really about those who work for minimum wage, or are you simply mindlessly repeating the ignorance of others?

You are free to live in a country in which people earn $1 an hour. You probably wouldn't want to live there yourself, but you are welcome to go, if you don't like it here.

Please, enlighten us on how someone who WORKS is "sitting on their ass" and has "someone else spoonfeeding" her. If anything, in this country it is often the so-called capitalists who are getting a lot of the handouts these days.
