  2. Don't you worry about roving drug gangs going on American killing sprees in Columbo land? That's where Tony Montana got his supply, from a Columbian connection :)

What do you think about Costa Rica? How is where you are living better, or worse? I guess whatI'm asking is why Colombia?

  3. It is odd that I don't get notification of posts to a thread I created, a bug I guess.

Just to update to the health thing, I have added Canada Dry to my list of sodas that don't agree with my heart. Thats two anyway, Cola and Canada Dry.

I quit Coca-Cola as mentioned and it stopped the heart arrhythmia which I believe is linked to creating a low potassium condition.

Centrum Advance tablets boosting me now I feel better. Be aware that the European and Americas formulation of Centrum are very different. The Americas version has WAY more of several things as the EU took a cautious view and mandated RDAs. Americas version works very noticeably stonger however :)

As well as coke, I used to drink a lot of Canada Dry however I switched to 7up only as the local store in Medellin has rarely had it recently. Well yesterday was hot (I'm in Panama) so I drank 1.5L of it and this morning the arrhythmia has returned strongly today.

Not very scientific, just observation. At this rate I will eliminate everything pleasurable from my diet just in time to die of old age haha.. :(

  4. Soda in general won't do your health any favors, regardless of brand or flavor.

  5. Colombia has one of the largest 'perception gaps' in the world though it has been closing since 2010 fairly rapidly. It is very safe and people are nice, never felt any risk here taking reasonable precautions not to drive to the old downtown with windows down wearing gold or waving new Samsung phone about.

Not all of Colombia is great value, Cartagena is pricey but Medellin and the Antioquia region generally are great/beautiful. Only snag is development is so fast now if you buy an apartment you can't be certain someone won't build in front of you :)

Costa Rica I have not been to but everyone has the same view of it. Nice however too 'gringo'? & too expensive for what it is. Panama is about half the cost of Costa Rica and Colombia half of Panama (though rising).

I like to live simply with a little luxury only sometimes. Epicurean philosophy, to enjoy a good meal you should eat plainly most days etc. For me, Epicurus was quite the lifestyle guru of his day, things he wrote about how a human can best be happy have only recently been re-discovered by us modern people.

Colombia's occasional luxury limitations, particularly in the countryside were actually a big draw for me when I moved here.

  6. True however excessive 7-Up was benign to my heart. I don't like Sprite which is a Coca-Cola product.

It is probably a common ingredient in Coca-Cola brands mixed up in this. I know my potassium was very low, that was in the labs and still is. The reaction today.. one day of overdose is maybe enough to cause something.

When I quit smoking for about a year I found if I smelled cigarette smoke it would make my heart race. Perhaps a post-addict reaction running in parallel with the potassium deficiency.

I may just buy a Soda-Stream like we had as a kid and start making my own.

  7. But keep in mind how much sugar there is, even in 7-Up.

  8. There is diet 7-Up. But might be the fizz the carbonation that is as bad as the sugar on the teeth?

  9. Stop! I need something left to make life worth living ;) haha

The carbonation is fine I hope, it is only 0.04% of the atmosphere but if it rotted things, people would have noticed. I'm not looking.

The main danger as I remember from my university days was making ultra-carbonated black Smirnoff vodka. I invented the Smirnoff alco-pop years before they came up with ICE. Just without a mixer it could knock a horse.

The CO2 has some effect where it increases the transmission of alcohol into the blood. We did it with Arberlour cask strength once (57%) and it nearly killed a guy. Great days.
