Merkel willing to recapitalise banks

  1. Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, said Berlin was prepared to recapitalise its banking sector and was willing to discuss a European Union-wide plan to shore up the region’s teetering financial sector as soon as the next regional summit in two weeks.

Speaking in Brussels on Wednesday after a meeting with José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission president, Ms Merkel declined to support a specific plan to aid banks, saying that should be left to technical experts. But she urged leaders to co-ordinate their efforts.
