Florida fire chief dies from COVID-19 after virus sidelines 75% of department

A Florida fire chief has died from COVID-19 after the virus sidelined 75 percent of his department last month.

Officials in Lake City said they do not know whether Fire Chief Randy Burnham, who died Sunday after battling the virus for several weeks, had been vaccinated. A fire department lieutenant in Lake City, 60 miles west of Jacksonville, is also currently hospitalized with COVID-19 and on a ventilator, according to Channel 4 news.

Austin Thomas, a driver-engineer with the department, told Channel 4 that "August was a rough month for the 21-man fire station with, at one time, 75% of its employees either positive with the virus or in quarantine."

So comorbidities includes overweight. Tom Brady is clinically overweight. More than half of Americans have a “comorbidity.”

You’d be hard pressed to find an adult over 35 without a comorbidity.

The COVID-19 risk for vaccinated people is roughly equal to 'riding in a vehicle,' recent data suggest

The odds of a vaccinated person getting sick with COVID-19 have changed since the more transmissible Delta variant came to dominate the U.S. pandemic, but probably not as much as you think, David Leonhardt writes in Tuesday's New York Times. In July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the "terrifying fact" that "vaccinated people with the Delta variant of the COVID virus carried roughly the same viral load in their noses and throats as unvaccinated people," but newer data "suggests the true picture is less alarming."

Statistics from Utah, Virginia, and King County (Seattle), Washington — three areas that report detailed data on COVID-19 infections by vaccination status — "are consistent with the idea that about 1 in 5,000 vaccinated Americans have tested positive for COVID each day in recent weeks," Leonhardt writes, and in areas, like Seattle, with high vaccination rates, social distancing, and mask usage, the odds are "probably less than 1 in 10,000."

The risks aren't zero —as Axios' Felix Salmon notes, a 1-in-5,000 risk every day works out to about a 7 percent per year chance of getting sick from COVID-19. And Leonhardt waves off the undiagnosed breakthrough cases, because they are "are often so mild that people do not notice them and do not pass the virus to anyone else."

But the reality is that "the risks of getting any version of the virus remain small for the vaccinated, and the risks of getting badly sick remain minuscule," Leonhardt writes. "In Seattle on an average recent day, about one out of every one million vaccinated residents have been admitted to a hospital with COVID symptoms. That risk is so close to zero that the human mind can't easily process it. My best attempt is to say that the COVID risks for most vaccinated people are of the same order of magnitude as risks that people unthinkingly accept every day, like riding in a vehicle."

You can read Leonhardt's entire case — and his explanation about why viral load "can end up being irrelevant" if you're vaccinated —atThe New York Times.

From your quote on another thread a few minutes ago.

"These studies demonstrated that there was not increased disease severity in children. Instead, more children have COVID-19, because there is more disease in the community," CDC Director Rochelle Walensky told reporters during a briefing Thursday.

Which is why unvaccinated children are significantly at risk when the community spread levels are high. Many more children are landing up in the hospital and enduring long Covid. This increase in severely ill children could be avoided if those 12 and above get vaccinated -- and school systems use masks -- all of this will reduce community spread greatly, even with Delta.

Significantly at risk... for something like the flu.
Yet you want healthy young kids to risk their immune systems with boosters for life.

For the risk of ADE in the future.

You and your types are dangerous selfish scumbags.
If some future variants becomes statistically dangerous for healthy young kids...
and they have a booster which works on that variant... let the parents decide then.

No reason to temporarily spike antibodies in the young and healthy for vaccines which are not even that great vs delta.

Soon vaccination will effectively be mandatory at many schools, many employers and access to many venues. Especially in California where the state will gladly support mandatory vaccines.

You should get your vaccination now to protect society and yourself.

You do realize the hospitalization and death rate for Covid in children is much higher than the flu.

go ahead... show us the stats for young healthy kids...

Last I checked in San Diego

    0 deaths under 9.
    2 deaths under 19...

and that is not broken out by risk factors.

And yet the number of Covid children deaths nationwide have increased by 33% in a mere eight week period. The children hospitalizations are way up. Pediatric ICUs are out of space and filled with children with Covid. Not a pretty situation The highly infectious Delta variant greatly changes the situation of the unvaccinated --- including children.

I will also mention your talking point that it only matters if the children are dead is absurd.
