One important note from this article -- “The viral load in the Delta variant is 1,260 times higher than the alpha variant”.

Florida Sees Surge In COVID Cases, FIU’s Infectious Disease Expert Dr. Aileen Marty Said Delta Variant Is Big Concern
    https://miami.cbslocal.com/2021/07/...leen-marty-said-delta-variant-is-big-concern/

Florida saw a significant jump in the number of new COVID-19 cases in the past couple of weeks as the more contagious Delta variant continued to spread.

“The viral load in the Delta variant is 1,260 times higher than the alpha variant,” said Florida International University infectious disease specialist Dr. Aileen Marty.

Marty said the COVID 19 pandemic is still a very real concern and the increase in cases of the Delta variant strain is proof

“The virus gets in our cells easier and replicates easier, it can overwhelm even the protection that is normal for a younger individual,” she said.

From July 9th to 17th, there was an 11 percent increase in Delta variant COVID cases.

Statewide, last week more than 45,600 people tested positive for COVID-19 getting the virus and there were 59 additional deaths. The state’s new case positivity rate stands at 11.5 percent.

Florida reported 20 percent of the nation’s new coronavirus cases over the last two weeks even though it makes up just 6.5 percent of the population.

Marty said the virus now impacting those who originally did not have a high risk of getting it

“It’s so much easier to transmit. We’re also seeing a lot more severity of illness in young people who are not vaccinated,” she said.

Because of the increase in transmission, Marty said it’s a necessity that even those who are vaccinated should continue taking precautions like washing hands and wearing masks

“In a setting that you could potentially experience a high dose of the virus, if you’re in an unventilated space with people who are maskless and it’s crowded, you should wear a mask even if you are vaccinated. You can protect yourself and your community and in turn, by protecting yourself, you are also protecting the economy,” she said.

Marty said approximately 95 percent of those hospitalized now with COVID are not vaccinated. She said vaccinations are the number one protection against the virus.

Despite Miami-Dade County’s 75 percent vaccination rate, there were 7,052 newly reported cases last week and the county has a 7.4 percent new case positivity rate.

In Broward, the vaccination rate is 67 percent, but added 3,850 new cases last week and has a new case positivity rate of 8.1 percent.

Monroe County, with a 69 percent vaccination rate, added 94 new cases last week and has an 8.1 percent positivity rate.

The Delta variant is so contagious, those unprotected will likely get it, a Trump administration FDA chief says

    https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/18/health/us-coronavirus-sunday/index.html

Millions of Americans are jeopardizing their health, freedom and finances by not getting vaccinated and putting themselves at risk of the most infectious coronavirus strain yet, current and former federal health officials say.

"Most people will either get vaccinated, or have been previously infected, or they will get this Delta variant," Dr. Scott Gottlieb told CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

"And for most people who get this Delta variant, it's going to be the most serious virus that they get in their lifetime in terms of the risk of putting them in the hospital," said Gottlieb, who was commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration during the Trump administration.

For those not fully vaccinated, "quality of mask is going to make a difference with a variant that spreads more aggressively, like Delta does, where people are more contagious and exude more virus," he said.

In research posted online, scientists examining 62 cases of the Delta variant found viral loads about 1,260 times higher than those found from 63 cases from the early epidemic wave in 2020.

The Delta variant is also sending younger and previously healthy people to hospitals -- the vast majority of which have not been vaccinated, say doctors in several states suffering surges.

"This year's virus is not last year's virus," said Dr. Catherine O'Neal, an infectious disease specialist at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

"It's attacking our 40-year-olds. It's attacking our parents and young grandparents. And it's getting our kids," O'Neal said. She said her Covid-19 unit now has more patients in their 20s who were previously healthy.
"You have to get vaccinated," O'Neal said. "That's the only way to end it. Masks and mitigation, they're not going to take it. It's going to be vaccination."

Since February, 97% of cases and deaths related to Covid-19 in Louisiana were among people not fully vaccinated, Gov. John Bel Edwards said Friday.

Like with any vaccine, a small percentage of vaccinated people may get a breakthrough infection. But it's literally impossible to get Covid-19 from any of the vaccines used in the US because none of them have any coronavirus in them.

"Even if you do have a breakthrough infection -- which, again, happens in a very small minority of people -- it's likely to be a mild or asymptomatic infection," US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy told CNN on Sunday.
But most Americans are not fully vaccinated. As of Sunday, only 48.6% of Americans were fully vaccinated, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Many Americans have not been vaccinated due to misinformation, which "takes away our freedom and our power to make (educated) decisions for us and our families," the surgeon general said.
Now, infections of the Delta variant have spread to all 50 states.

In Los Angeles County, the rate of new Covid-19 cases has increased 300% since July 4, the county health department said. Covid-19 hospitalizations have more than doubled from the previous month.

The surge in new Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations prompted county officials to reinstate an indoor mask mandate.

They should just get vaccinated and then their fears will only be that if they have a break through infection with the Covid Delta Variant...they'll just have a mild illness that doesn't require hospitalization / ICU.

  7. Any surge is beginning at the southern border. Millions coming in. Thousands testing positive and that is only a sample of the few thousand they catch. Ten times that are just coming across unchecked.
Rational people might take the whole new surge is coming if they actually made an attempt to secure the border. Until then any "surge" just sounds like another boogeyman scare tatic.

Rational people would want to see the evidence of "millions coming in".

It's here now, and spreading normally and rapidly between Americans. It's irrelevant now how the first instances got here.
