What is most upsetting about this holiday is its political appeasement nature especially considering that we already have a full market-closing political appeasement holiday on the list. How many do you want? And what about other ethnicities? They have made just as much contribution in building America and received just as much discrimination and persecution. Why aren't they receiving their own holidays? The Irish who built all the roads and bridges and yet constantly faced systematic discrimination, how about we make St. Patrick's Day as an official federal holiday? The Chinese who were brought into this country as cheap labour to work on the railways, who were discriminated against and persecuted until this day, why aren't they receiving a national holiday? The Latinos, the ...? The list goes on and on and on and will never end since America is an immigrant country that's made up of people from all around the world and every single immigrant group's got a story to tell. So why aren't they all getting at least one federal holiday to either celebrate their culture or commemorate something? Very soon, every day of the year will be a holiday and nobody will be working.

IMO what we should do is really take no days off except maybe New Year's Eve and New Year's Day to celebrate the end of a year and the beginning of a new year. We have weekends to rest and if we want to take a break here and there, we will just take a day or a group of days off as sick day(s) or vacations. That's more than enough. Why force people to take days off when it's not going to achieve or change anything or please anybody except to stop the economy from running? You think the special interest groups are going to be pleased just because there is a holiday to commemorate their "cause"? What are they getting out of it?

I can't speak for Americans but where I'm from, actual assault or rape on a woman has always been taken seriously, at least as long as I've been alive. Nothing much has changed in this regard.

Metoo tried to push the agenda that if a woman sleeps with a movie producer willingly for a promise of a movie role, if that role falls through, she can change her mind and decide it was rape months later. That's absurd but hey, it's nearly impossible to prove unless you have witnesses. To me it just looks like sex is just a currency in Hollywood.

Women have been using rape/abuse accusations to achieve things for a long time, not all but more than a few. Amber Heard isn't a very rare case, there's plenty more just like her. It's done because it works so well. If we didn't have recordings on the Depp/Heard case, Depp would likely be in jail now. Makes you wonder how many innocent men were locked up before smartphones became ubiquitous.

To me, racism is still alive and well and it's most prevalent among blacks. There's so many ridiculous claims and cries of racism that the word itself has become a meme. You'll see black people aggressively confronting random whites for "cultural appropriation", violently assaulting Asians, using more racist slurs than any other race and doing it openly. So for me, when I hear claims of "racism" by black people, my first reaction is that of laughter, the word has been overused to the point of not having any power.

Perfectly said. I also first thought "wait, there's already a holiday celebrating the fight against racism". Are they going to keep adding national holidays whenever there's a politically sensitive police shooting?

The US economy is probably the most efficient economy in the world. I don’t know how you’re judging productivity but it takes about 3 Chinese to equal one American in per capita GDP.

Yeah, ending slavery really should not be viewed as a black or white “holiday.”

You’ve obviously never worked for a living. Talking like Americans have access to a wealth of vacation and sick days is just ignorant.

The US economy is a juggernaut. There’s plenty of wealth, we can certainly afford the holiday.

GDP per capita is a fairly poor measure of productivity...those Qataris really work hard and Ukrainians barely work at all in those steel mills (pre-war).

  10. This is exactly the argument for most sexual assaults. And I agree, which is why actual investigation needs to be done as opposed to before where they didn't believe and after where they believed without evidence.

I haven't seen a single person be racist against anyone but blacks on this thread. What should I take from that?
