Mar. 15, 2007 Former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian, left, and former UNLV star forward Larry Johnson share a laugh with fans while signing autographs during an event at The Orleans on Wednesday night. (Photos from lvrj.com) Towel-biting Jerry Tarkanian was the architect of the UNLV program that had basketball fans buzzing in the early 1990s. Jerry Tarkanian, 76, is "retired" in Las Vegas, actively supporting UNLV and other local activities, participating in various sports exhibitions and autograph signings, speaking at sports functions and coaching clinics, making appearances on sports shows, providing basketball anecdotes and historical perspectives for sports writers, etc. "... Over 31 seasons as a Division I head coach, Tarkanian amassed 729 wins, with just 201 losses for a career winning percentage of .784, ranking seventh all-time among NCAA Division I men's basketball coaches. His 729 wins ranks 12th in NCAA history. Tarkanian had 25 seasons with 20 or more wins, which ranks fifth on the all-time charts, and is one of just nine coaches all-time to record four or more seasons with 30 wins (he had four all with UNLV). Additionally, Tarkanian was the second fastest coach to reach 700 career wins, behind only Kentucky's Adolph Rupp." http://unlvrebels.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/080805aab.html Wikipedia's take on the Tark a page from The First 100 Who Shaped Southern Nevada[!!] more facts and stats on the "Tark the Shark" NCAA $2.5M settlement with Jerry Tarkanian; 25 year chronology of events
