Make Me a Trader : documentary

Discussion in 'Educational Resources' started by marketsurfer, Mar 15, 2017.

  1. Anton was indeed the hired help on the series "million dollar traders" which replicated the turtles experiment in 2008. Very entertaining series which I've watched a few times.

He has since set up something called the institute of trading and portfolio management. This is their youtube channel. The Florida video is the latest instalment. I have a confession to make; I have "watched" all of these videos. Reason being I find it hard to work in complete silence (too much time spent on trading floors), and find it helpful to have some kind of trashy TV on in the background (Bloomberg is too distracting - I don't need or want to know what the market is doing and the adverts are insanely annoying). This kind of dross is perfect.

They offer courses and mentoring to aspiring traders with some kind of incubation deal afterwards. Naturally I haven't been on one of these courses as (a) I don't need them (b) they are awfully expensive and (c) I have a generally low opinion of these kinds of courses (the median course that is out there is dangerous crap, and at best has material you could get in a $50 book).

However... and it pains me to say this because Anton is clearly a man who looks in the mirror every day and sees the cleverest and most handsome man in the world... based on what I can glean from watching the publicly available videos I would say the courses are probably better than most of the dross that is out there, since Anton probably knows more about his chosen subject (long:short fundamental equity investing) than the average person running one of these courses.

I still think he's a prat though. And I use that word deliberately to send all you US based people scurrying for "google translate British - American".

The programme was broadcast a while ago (they timed it quite well with the 2008 crisis to give the newbie traders a tough time !).

But my memory is calling him "head instructor" would be a bit generous. From memory, the TV programme mostly portrayed him as sitting on his own, playing with a Bloomberg in a paritioned room off the main "floor" and just occasionally emerging from there to give the traders a bollocking.

I would class the programme more as interesting viewing from a social experiment aspect rather than anything interesting in terms of the markets and trading.

Except in the British TV series which is a reality show, all the traders were amateurs who were handed a portfolio of money to manage and whoever achieves the highest gain at the end would get a job trading for the hedgie. And the Wall Street Warrior is a show supposedly about professionals, portfolio managers, hedge fund managers, traders, investment bankers and etc. It turns out one of the hedge fund manager featured on the show was a fraud running a Ponzi scheme and is serving time in jail right now, another one was a fake who was a hired actress to pretend to be a trader so all in all, I enjoyed the British show much better.

Not sure about what he teach or not. But I totally disagree with you both. He most probably have access to market execution through his investment banks and not speaking about how huge holding probably he is owning if he traded for GS, etc..

  6. I've just been checking his website.
Looks like to me that Anton is into it to kind of keep himself busy, not really for the need to fleece people.
Also, their trainees accounts deposits are $20k/$50k. IF that then means, borrowing and then leveraging on the borrowing, it could mean that his approach is capital intensive, as well as needs to be constantly "refitted" according to news. May be that's why he'd be willing to share and teach how he trades. Otherwise, I can not imagine any person who knows how to trade profitably, would share it for 2,000$ tuition fee.

  10. Thanks for the appreciation.
Seriously: 90 minutes is too long. I am also waiting for Surf reasons of why we should watch it.
