Make a living trading FOREX?

Discussion in 'Forex' started by mjl, Mar 16, 2009.

  1. I don't need to write my own or find free ones on forums, there are dozens of very capable EA coders who will write one to my specification for less than $100.

The benefit of having one written is that as I will have developed it I'll know what makes it tick. Another benefit is the satisfaction of knowing that I've not been scammed for some ridiculous amount by some scam spammer snake oil seller trying to tout his garbage to gullible novices on internet trading forums!

As achilles28 said, you're not going to find a consistently profitable automated strategy for sale for a few hundred bucks, period.

    Hope that helps :)

    Good thinking!

I'll give my money to Expert Strangers as they are almost always Winners AND Honest!

Especially in a field with little verification and oversight!

I hope these guys charge enough as I want them to be fairly compensated!?

I can't add much here because many good people have posted valid advice.

What I can say is I have a friend who used to work at a large (300+ employee) online forex firm, and he says that nearly 100% lose their capital within 6 months.

Back to the guy with the idea that Forex trading is a zero sum game.... How does one succeed in Forex? You need access to large amounts of capital, insider knowledge, millions of $ in trading technology, and millisecond execution speed. So who has all this? They are FX traders at large banks. They see the order flow. They have the connections. They have quants programming with clusters of supercomputers. This is not the type of people I would want to play poker against.

Each market has different odds of success depending on many factors. Forex would be the last place I would think of trading.

FOREX is not a Zero Sum Game. Trading is almost NEVER a Zero Sum Game

In a Zero Sum Game no money leaves the game unless it is won by one of the players-- so there must be at least one winner. In FOREX , money leaves the game to the spread.

This alone does not tell us weather a game like FOREX is beatable, but it is important to understand.

If you and I bet one dollar each on the flip of a coin this is a Zero Sum Game. If I make you bet $2 to win only $1 this also is Zero Sum, however, you have a negative expectation as I am paying you too little when you win.. you must lose in the long run.

Poker is a game of skill and in a game where no money is taken by the operator, or given to the dealers as tips, it would be a Zero Sum Game and the best player would have a positive expectation. In most casinos, the fee for playing, and tips to the dealer will not stop a strong player from winning.

In horse race betting, even though there is some skill, it is incredibly hard to be a winner because too much money is taken by the track- often around 18%. The causes the odds on the horses to be much lower.

Trading is almost NEVER a Zero Sum Game. One big question in each form of trading (or situation) is can a skilled trader have an advantage that is large enough, despite his costs which includes things like the spread and commissions.

When it comes to the question of "Can I beat this Game" (have plus EV)- trading, slots, a poker game, chess, etc.- Sometimes the answer is yes! Sometimes No!?

"Can I learn to beat this game for a worthwhile amount?"

"Is it worthwhile to try and learn about a game?"

As a professional gambler in Vegas, these are always a big questions.
