right, and how many senators did the GOP have in 2021? And while the article talks about Grassley blocking Murphy's bill, Murphy turned around and blocked Grassley's gun control bill.

But if the Senate isn't controlled by Republicans, why couldn't Democrats pass the legislation they wanted?

    1.Enough to block background checks

    2.Did Grassley's bill include UBC's?

3.GOP had enough to block it as the article shows.

Again, I'm sorry if I'm being obtuse. But if the GOP only had 50, and Harris has the deciding vote in a tie, what is it I'm missing? If it were important enough to the Dems to pass something, they would have.

And whether or not Grassley's bill included UBCs, it was still a path forward to tougher legislation. They could have taken that and pushed for more.

You are are trying to make the argument that Dems are against UBC's while around 50 DEMs support UBCs and around 5 GOP Senators do.

A party that around 45 senators are against something as simple as not allowing classified gun sales in parking lots or gun shows paving a path forward to tougher legislation? No way imo.

You can not debate with Trumpism anywhere in this Political section of the board.

They do not care about what's occurring now as in today or recently because their argument will always be about Hillary, Obama, etc when it comes to gun laws when it's been a growing problem long before then...only recently escalated going into the Pandemic and even more Assault weapons deaths exiting the Pandemic.

I'm serious, if there were 50 mass shootings today with Assault Weapons in which 100 children were killed in each mass shooting...the GOP argument on capitol hill will be about Obama and Biden instead of acting on what is occurring right now with those 50 mass shootings...
    • The idiots will blame transgenders, gays, and Blacks.
This has happened before too with the inaction of politicians with a different type of blame game. It involved automobile safety seat belt laws. There was a political party strongly against automobile safety seat belt laws because they would infringe on America's personal freedom.
    • “Seat-belt laws steal our freedom,”
    • “This has nothing to do with public safety,”
    • “It’s personal safety, and people should have the right to choose for themselves...keep politics out of it,”
    • "Seatbelts will cause internal injuries if worn and then in an accident."
In fact, there were Tennessee GOP politicians that tried an amendment that they wanted to be included if it allowed parents to hold infants in their laps because they had fond memories of watching their son and daughter-in-law drive up to the house with their newborn child in the front seat and didn’t want to deprive all Tennessee families of that experience...

I'm not joking with the above. That was an example of the stupidity of these politicians and it was easy to see how car manufacturers controlled them...

Feeding that ignorance with millions of dollars in donations to keep the GOP in power every year so that there will be no action on child restraint seat belt laws that would cost car manufacturers even more money if such laws were passed.

Yet, it took Democrats with the help of Republican pediatricians in a conservative state in the South — Tennessee to put enough voting pressure on the Tennessee GOP to become the first state in America to pass automobile safety seat belt laws on the state level.

It was a hard-fought battle for those Democrats in Tennessee because car manufacturers are powerful and had lobbied strongly against them for many years along with the fact that car manufacturers helped the Tennesse GOP stay in power.

All the above even when the GOP of Tennessee knew car accidents were a leading cause of death among young children in the United States, killing hundreds of toddlers and infants each year. But through the accident prevention committee, they learned about peer-reviewed studies that showed child safety seats, which represented new technology at the time, could reduce childhood traffic deaths by up to 90 percent...

It was GOP voters / Parents / Pediatricians in Tennessee that decided to instead talk to the Democrats to continue the fight against the GOP politicians and the powerful car manufacture lobbyists.

In my opinion, due to similarities between Assault Weapons and Automobile Seat Belt laws...powerful lobbyists along with excuses made by one party blaming the other party (e.g. why didn't you do something or it's my personal freedom)...

Americans need to attack this from the State level (not the federal level) and then hope other states will follow to then put pressure on the Federal level for a federal law.

Sadly, only after more children killed by Assault Weapons in GOP-controlled states, especially in the states that oppose Assault Weapons laws the most while they are in bed with the lobbyists before the entire country can get a federal law.

Regardless, my point is that it needs to become state law first.

Anyways, the Tennessee child safety seat law went into effect in 1978 and was effective almost immediately, more than doubling car seat usage within the first few years and reducing childhood traffic fatalities by 70 percent...other states (Democrat & Republican states) would follow by the mid-1980's until every state in America had some form of child passenger restraint legislation on the books. ;)

Shockingly, all states in America already had laws by 1965 (some say 1968) that required seat belts to be installed in automobiles...

Yet, only about 11% of Americans were buckling up.

It then took another whopping almost 20 years before requiring seat belts to be worn (buckling up) while driving.

Just as shocking, other countries already had seat belt laws long before the United States because those countries were less political about child safety and they realized something strange...it saved adults too by reducing dramatically the number of overall deaths in automobile accidents.
    • What the fuck is wrong with the United States and we're supposed to be leading the free world ?
We can not even protect our country from ourselves while other democratic countries are able to do it when it comes to public safety.

No, I'm just trying to make the argument that if Democrats wanted to pass gun control (with or without UBCs) they could have done so during Obama's administration or Biden's more recently.

Trumpism. Right. I've said numerous times I don't like and don't want Trump anywhere near politics. But because my opinion differs from yours, its "Trumpism". You're a schmuck.
