Why is it every time another young black person gets killed for some absurd reason people start obsessing the details. Bottom line you can't have anyone including cops shooting people for such minor reasons. It's time an example was set and throw a few of these cops in jail for some time to deter their peers from considering doing the same thing. I'm thinking 4 or 5 years in a federal pen might be a suitable deterrent, longer if there was clear intent to kill. Recent cases and how they were handled obviously weren't enough of a deterrent to this woman. One might go all the way back to the shooting in Florida by the vigilante security guard and note the cases since sent a message that you could literally get away with murder in certain circumstances. And all we've seen is a steady stream of these cases since in the US. Something has to change.
Officer Who Fatally Shot Wright Resigns, As Does the Police Chief https://www.wral.com/officer-who-fatally-shot-wright-resigns-as-does-the-police-chief/19624967/ Kim Potter, the police officer in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, who fatally shot Daunte Wright on Sunday, has resigned from the Police Department, her union said in a statement Tuesday. The city’s police chief, Tim Gannon, also announced that he was departing. In a letter that Potter sent to city officials Tuesday, she said she was resigning immediately, the union said. “I have loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department and my fellow officers if I resign immediately,” she wrote. The union, Law Enforcement Labor Services, represents more than 6,400 members throughout Minnesota. Potter, 48, had been an officer with the Brooklyn Center Police Department for 26 years. She was first licensed as a police officer in Minnesota in 1995 and graduated from Saint Mary’s College in Winona, Minnesota, in 1994 with a criminal justice major, school officials said. Until her resignation, she had been placed on administrative leave within the department after shooting and killing Wright, 20. In a news conference Monday, Gannon said he believed from watching Potter's body camera video that she was attempting to use a Taser on Wright and pulled her firearm instead, killing him.
Cops resign when they know they are about to be fired to avoid having the termination on thier record. That shit needs to stop.Any resignation while under investigation should be listed as fired.
I agree in part. Imo, it should be listed in the record as resigned/retired pending investigation, or something to that effect. This should be true with all jobs. The investigation must continue; and the resigned/retired employee must cooperate (or be deemed terminated). If the investigation concludes a fireable offense occurred, then the status, etc. should be updated to terminated. And any paid benefits must then be returned (Unless the retired cop would otherwise still be allowed to keep their benefits). Otherwise, cops etc. with a lot of seniority have less incentive to 'be professional,' since they know that they can just walk away from any unlawful shootings they perform--knowing that they can keep their benefits.
