Some of Madison Cawthorn's supporters are turning on him -- and say he's 'come unscrewed'
    https://www.rawstory.com/madison-cawthorn-2657145583/

On Tuesday, The Daily Beast reported that some right-wing voters in Western North Carolina who helped elect Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) are now fed up with his antics — and ready to show him the door.

Many of those people, noted reporter Sam Brodey, were gathered at the recent Republican primary debate in Asheville — to which Cawthorn was a no-show — and expressed their anger about it.

"It wasn’t long ago that nearly everyone in the room could say they were, proudly, Madison Cawthorn people. But in his 15 months in office, Cawthorn has amassed a streak of scandals, strategic misfires, and baffling statements that haven’t just tarnished the GOP faithful’s pride in him — they’ve sapped his support," reported Brodey.

"At first, I thought it was the liberal media ganging up on him," a man named Frank told the publication. "Now, I’m thinking he’s not cut out for it."

Constituent Richard Bennett, meanwhile, admitted that he's "a little disappointed" in Cawthorn, whom he said "seems to have come unscrewed."

Cawthorn recently enraged Republicans on Capitol Hill by claiming, with no evidence, that his fellow Republicans engage in cocaine-fueled orgies. He further enraged Republicans in his own state by briefly jumping districts, then changing his mind — after which the GOP leaders in the state legislature endorsed his opponent, state Sen Chuck Edwards.

Madison Cawthorn busted by conservative outlet for blowing taxpayer dollars at a luxury resort
    https://www.rawstory.com/madiso0n-cawthorn-money/

Writing for the conservative Washington Examiner, investigative reporter Andrew Kerr claimed that Rep. Madison Cawthorn dropped close to $3000 in taxpayer money at a lavish resort in his hometown of Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Adding insult to injury, the same week the controversial lawmaker was living it up at the resort, he was tweeting that "Democratic politicians certainly love wasting your hard-earned tax dollars."

According to Kerr, "Cawthorn spent $2,950 from his taxpayer-funded members representational allowance at Skylaranna, a resort based in his hometown of Hendersonville, North Carolina, that boasts luxury accommodations for romantic dinners, weddings, and corporate events. The freshman Republican lawmaker categorized his Aug. 9 payment to the luxury resort as a 'legislative planning food and beverage' expense."

The report states a review of Cawthorn's expenses also showed "$491 for a trip to Papa's and Beer Mexican Restaurant, two visits to Chick-fil-A totaling $382," with Cawthorn labeling the expenditures as "legislative planning food and beverage" expenses once again.

The journalist then called attention to Cawthorn's complaints on Twitter the same week of the Skylaranna visit.

"Also between Aug. 6 and 10, the firebrand conservative issued multiple tweets railing against Democrats in Congress for wasting taxpayer funds," he wrote, quoting Cawthorn tweeting, "Democratic politicians certainly love wasting your hard-earned tax dollars while forcing your businesses to shut down," and then adding, "NC-11 is sick and tired of our hard-earned tax dollars being spent on these trillion-dollar socialist monstrosities. They’re OUR dollars, not the socialists."

A spokesperson for the embattled lawmaker issued a statement claiming, "Our district retreat occurred on those dates; those expenses were for the district and D.C. staff on the retreat. Nearly every office on Capitol Hill has a district retreat and a budget specifically designated for one."

A spokesperson for Skylaranna declined to reveal specifically what the taxpayers were paying for during the 26-year-old lawmaker's visit.

Keep in mind this is in a local N.C. newspaper that formerly strongly supported Cawthorn...

Complaint filed against Cawthorn by fired staffer

    https://smokymountainnews.com/news/item/33441-complaint-filed-against-cawthorn-by-fired-staffer

Saying in a leaked recording that “we all want the ultimate goal of him never serving again,” Lisa Wiggins, a former caseworker and campaign aide to Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-Henderson) has filed an employment-related campaign against the embattled congressman.

“What he’s done to me was illegal, morally wrong, you name it, it’s been done,” Wiggins said in a phone call to David Wheeler, co-founder of nonpartisan advocacy PAC American Muckrakers, more commonly known as Fire Madison Cawthorn.

“I had a conversation with Lisa a couple weeks ago to back up the notes I was taking, and I didn’t realize Lisa would provide me with so much information so I saved a copy,” Wheeler said.

North Carolina is a one-party state, meaning that recording telephone conversations doesn’t require the consent of all parties engaged in the communication.

Wiggins said in the call that she’d advance claims involving violations of the Family and Medical Leave Act, which entitles eligible employees to “unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons,” according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

In the call Wiggins said she was denied leave when her uncle passed away and her husband had a heart attack during the same week.

Wiggins, 46, said she believed she was Cawthorn’s oldest caseworker and that she’d been given a warning but was fired three days after the warning. It’s not clear what the warning was for.

She also said that Cawthorn had closed all of his district offices except for the Hendersonville office, and was using call forwarding to consolidate constituent service calls.

“I know that because I drove and closed them all,” she said. “He didn’t have enough caseworkers to man them. He didn’t care, he doesn’t care about his constituents. He does not care.”

“If you come from Cherokee County you’re driving five hours to see your congressman,” Wiggins said. “But you can’t see your congressman anyway when you go to the office. There’s no way you can get a meeting with him unless he’s trying to pull some votes and that’s about the only way.”

Wiggins went on to make a number of other claims against her former employer, including more liquor bottles in the Hendersonville office than water bottles, and that she hadn’t seen the congressman she worked for since October.

She explained that she didn’t believe all of the sexual assault or harassment allegations against Cawthorn were true, but that she does believe some of them, including ones from his brief stint at Patrick Henry College, are true. No charges or suits have been filed against Cawthorn in regards to any of those claims.

As far as the candidate himself, I mean, he’s just a bad person. He’s a habitual liar and he’s going to say and do anything he can to your face but behind your back he’s completely opposite,” she said. “There’s some good stories I have – a lot of good stories.”

Cawthorn is currently facing seven other Republican challengers in the state’s May 17 Primary Election. Wiggins, a supporter of retired Army Col. Rod Honeycutt, said she hoped Cawthorn would not reach the 30% (plus one vote) threshold to avoid a runoff and proceed directly to the General Election in November.

“The main goal here is that he does not get that 30 plus 1 percent,” she said. “I don’t feel like he’s gonna get it. I just don’t feel like he’s gonna run away with it on May 17.”

The Fire Madison Cawthorn PAC endorsed another Cawthorn challenger, Republican Wendy Nevarez, and has encouraged Democrats to re-register as unaffiliated in advance of the April 22 deadline to vote against Cawthorn in the Republican Primary Election.

“The ultimate goal of course is to get him out,” Wiggins said. “I’m working harder here than I did for his campaign two years ago, and I mean, I worked really hard two years ago.”

Any work-related complaint from Wiggins would be handled by the Office of Congressional Workplace Rights, according to OCWR Executive Assistant Glenda DuPree.

When reached by phone earlier today, DuPree also said that if such a complaint were filed, it would be confidential, and that the OCWR could not even confirm or deny the existence of such a complaint.

“People need to know how this man really is,” Wiggins said. “He’s still got a lot of people fooled.”

When reached by phone, Wiggins said she had no comment on the matter, but Wheeler said that in a conversation with Wiggins yesterday, Wiggins indicated that the complaint had indeed been filed.

When first reached for comment, Cawthorn spokesman Luke Ball said he was not aware of any complaint being filed. A few hours later, Ball released the following statement:

“These accusations are verifiably false. The individual spreading these disgusting allegations is currently working for a primary opponent of Congressman Cawthorn. We believe these comments potentially amount to defamation of character, and are exploring options to ensure the Congressman’s name emerges from these slanderous remarks unscathed.”

New GOP-funded attack ad calls Rep. Madison Cawthorn a liar
    https://www.wral.com/new-gop-funded-attack-ad-calls-rep-madison-cawthorn-a-liar/20251765/

With early voting for this year's primary beginning Thursday, the airwaves are starting to heat up with political ads.

Many are attack ads. But only one appears to have been paid for by members of its target's own political party, and that's attracting national attention.

A bare-knuckled attack ad against Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn went on air in his 11th District this past weekend.

FEC documents show the ad, "Madison Cawthorn's Lies," was paid for by Results for NC PAC, which is aligned with another sitting Republican, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis.

"In perpetual pursuit of celebrity, Cawthorn will lie about anything," the narrator intones, calling the congressman "an attention-seeking embarrassment."

Cawthorn is a first-term congressman, elected in 2020. During his short tenure, he's gone from one controversy to the next – exhorting the crowd at the January 6th insurrection, driving with a revoked license, carrying weapons into places they're banned, and calling Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy a "thug."

He's also crossed swords with his own party's establishment in Washington as well as North Carolina, most recently by claiming his fellow Republicans in DC had invited him to orgies and used drugs in front of him.

Cawthorn has seven Republican challengers in this primary, including state Senator Chuck Edwards, R-Henderson, and Michele Woodhouse, the district's GOP chairwoman and a former Cawthorn supporter.

The state’s Republican establishment has lined up behind Edwards, more or less quietly, at least until now.

"Cawthorn’s antics help him but hurt us. Lying about conservatives, stolen valor. Madison Cawthorn lies for the limelight," the ad concludes.

The "stolen valor" accusation is a reference to Cawthorn’s claim in 2020 that he was accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy. He was not.

The Results for NC PAC is spending $310,000 to blanket western NC broadcast and cable airwaves with the spot. It's a larger media buy than Cawthorn's campaign has yet made in this election.

Tillis endorsed Edwards in March, saying that Cawthorn “has fallen well short of the most basic standards” for a congressional representative. This appears to be the first ad buy by the PAC since Tillis's re-election campaign in 2020.

Cawthorn has the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, reiterated by Trump at a rally in Selma, NC, in March. Cawthorn's campaign did not immediately respond to WRAL News's request for comment.

Rep. Madison Cawthorn found with a loaded gun at Charlotte airport
    https://www.wsoctv.com/news/local/s...charlotte-douglas/6TXLJM4MJZAB3NXHEA7UNKMJ5E/

Rep. Madison Cawthorn was cited for having a gun at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Tuesday morning, police said.

According to the TSA, a 9 mm handgun was discovered in a bag at Checkpoint D, and TSA officials contacted Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

A photo obtained by Channel 9 shows that a loaded Staccato C2 was recovered at the airport Tuesday.

Officers confirmed the gun was Cawthorn’s and said he cooperated with police.

Cawthorn was cited for possession of a dangerous weapon on city property, which is a city of Charlotte ordinance.

CMPD said it took the firearm, which is normal procedure.

This is not the first time a gun has been discovered on Cawthorn at an airport. In February 2021, TSA found a 9 mm handgun in Cawthorn’s carry-on bag at Asheville Regional Airport. Cawthorn did not face any criminal charges for the incident.

The TSA found 106 guns at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in 2021.

A spokesperson for Cawthorn did not respond to a request for comment.
