Trying to take a long signal from an MA crossover is like trading in the rear view mirror. Oh, price WENT up. (As in the past.) Hardly a solid entry point unless you have a strong market, and a strong stock behind you. In most cases, you're buying into the 'great fool' theory, and you're most likely looking at a reversal.
I wanted to give you a little more detail about John Fritz. He used a five moving average crossover system which he optimized walk forward. He allowed parameters to change based on a algorithm which cause them to only slowing shift over time. His optimization window was about 2500 days of data. He was featured in Futures magazine in the late 1990's which is how he ended up in the book.
