Other than gold, what stocks have a low beta relative to the index? I'm looking for something to buy that won't tank if the market as a whole collapses.
I like the utilities. Good dividends which provide nice yield and downside protection because of the yield. I don't mean some of the high flyers, which seems like a funny term to apply to utilities. Also defensive stocks with reasonable PE's and good dividend yield. Most importantly, I'd have a weekly chart with a 40 sma on every one of my choices.... or a monthly with a 20 sma.
Do a search on Yahoo. Just put in what ever beta amounts you want. Make sure that you understand beta though. Even stocks with low (not negative) beta will tank if the market tanks.
