And just how much has Trump grifted off of Republican donors that usually would go to the GOP mid-term candidate funding?
Probably enough to offset the money he lost by having Liz Cheney get republican and dem donations to bring him down. Plus he has raised quite a bit of funding off of the dem raid on Maralago.
These things ebb and flow. But yes democrats have caught a little wind. The NY 19 special election was very interesting not only because the democrat held roughly the same winning percentage as Biden won by in 2020 but also the Republican candidate was actually a pretty good candidate.
This is a very good point. Trump has siphoned a significant amount of otherwise GOP small dollar donors and he continues to raise money for himself instead of steering them back to the RNC and various Republican re-election committees as is the norm.
In theory. In practice, Trump gets donations from people who do not have the slightest interest in donating to the RNC and the duds it turns out and would rather poke their own eyes out than donate to it. If Trump is run over by a beer truck tomorrow, the RNC won't get an extra dime from them. How much help you think the RNC is going to give to Trump if he runs again? Yeh, about like last time or worse, much worse.
Now that we are past the primaries -- we are seeing GOP Senate candidates attempting to scrub away from their "voting fraud" Big Lie extremist views. I don't think the media or voters will allow them to change their skins so easily. Republican Senate candidate Blake Masters scrubbed language on campaign website saying the 2020 election was stolen from Trump https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/29/politics/blake-masters-campaign-website-changes/index.html
In a mid-term election normally the party not in the White House picks up many House and Senate seats. You would normally expect a pick-up of three Senate seats and about 40 House seats in a moderately good year (for the WH opposition). The Republicans -- with a boatload extremist, wacky Senate candidates and floundering House candidates are even going to fail to meet moderate expectations for pickups in this midterm election. In fact the entire situation is starting to look like a fiasco for Republicans. The GOP is likely to lose seats in the Senate and may not even pick up enough in the House to get a majority (which should have been a given). The red wave has become a poodle pissing on the floor.
