Longer Life, Healthier Life?

  1. Since I tend to be more health conscious than most of the people I know, a few of them occasionally kid me about planning to live forever and say that they don't want to live too long and become decrepit. But they miss the point.

Several years ago, someone lent me one of Andrew Weil's book, Healthy Aging. Dr. Weil explained it well. He describes the ideal life as being long, healthy and active until the very end, at which time the end comes quickly. The alternative that many people unfortunately face is one of very slow descent beginning far too prematurely due to ailment, accompanied by a diminishing quality of life for years before eventual death.

I think it's fair to say that, in large part, how we treat our bodies in our earlier years determines how our bodies treat us during our later years.

One thing I hear a lot is, "you can eat well, and get killed crossing the street". The point is to be healthy while you are alive period. Healthy means, no heartburn, IBD, stress related disorders, sleep well, get up invigorated and have as little ailments as possible while you are on this earth. Anyone can die at any given point in time, but the goal is to be able to dance until that time comes. peace out.

  4. I think he prefers the term "integrative medicine."

  5. I think "Integrative" is used mainly for the ones like him who are qualified/accredited in both conventional and alternative medical training/treatments.
