Long COVID Seen in 16.2 Percent of Pediatric COVID-19 Patients
Review also shows developing certain long COVID symptoms may be associated with female gender
    https://consumer.healthday.com/long...f-pediatric-covid-19-patients-2662267039.html

FRIDAY, July 21, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Overall, 16.2 percent of the pediatric population experience one or more persistent symptoms at least three months after COVID-19, according to a review published online July 21 in Pediatrics.

Li Jiang, M.D., M.P.H., from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, and colleagues conducted a systematic review to examine the prevalence and characteristics of the long-term clinical features of COVID-19 (long COVID) in the global pediatric population (aged 0 to 19 years). Published articles and preprints from December 2019 to December 2022 were included; 27 cohorts and four cross-sectional studies involving more than 15,000 pediatric participants met the inclusion criteria.

The researchers found reports of more than 20 persistent symptoms and clinical features among children and adolescents. Overall, 16.2 percent of the pediatric participants experienced one or more persistent symptoms at least three months after COVID-19. Developing certain long COVID symptoms was possibly associated with female gender.

"Long COVID in children and adolescents has been reported with a very wide symptom spectrum and with great heterogeneity among studies included in this review," the authors write. "The presentation of long COVID may change with time. There is the need for high quality, prospective, and well controlled studies to address these issues. In the interim, preventing COVID-19 infection and vaccinations for children and adolescents must remain a priority."

There's research now about the correlation between Obesity in children/young adolescents and Long Covid in children.

Factually, children rarely had severe Covid infections but it was more common for their Covid symptoms to last 1 - 2 days...many only had symptoms for a few hours...

A big reason why Covidiots said Covid is like the Flu.

Unfortunately, within a few weeks, 46% developed unexplained health problems that showed up about 4 weeks after their fast recovery from the initial Covid infection. 16% developed unexplained health problems that showed up 2 - 3 months after their fast recovery from the initial Covid infection.

    Unexplained Health Problems:

    Anosmia/Dysgeusia

    Autonomic Dysregulation

    · Palpitations, lightheadedness, dizziness, fatigue, blurry vision, falling, presyncope and decreased exercise tolerance

    · Orthostasis (hypotension or tachycardia)

    Chest Pain – 5% after 12 weeks.

    · coronary artery disease and myo-/pericarditis and venous thromboembolic disease

    Cognitive Impairment – 60% at 4 weeks

    · Symptom subcategories include Attention (Brain fog, lost train of thought, concentration problems), Processing Speed (Slowed thoughts), Motor Function (Slowed movements), Language (Word finding problems, reduced fluency), Memory (Poor recall, forgetting tasks), Mental Fatigue (Exhaustion, brain fog), Executive Function (Poor multitasking and/or planning), Visuospatial (Blurred vision, neglect).

Additional symptom categories include fatigue, cough, dyspnea, headaches, and mental health. Again, the evaluation of these symptoms should very similar to usual practice.

The final “cardiometabolic and autoimmune” symptom category - increased risk of diabetes, CKD, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Reminder, the above started showing up after an initial Covid infection that was barely a cough for many children or began showing up after recovery from an initial rare severe Covid infection that required hospitalization.

Simply, any child that was exposed to Covid regardless if they had symptoms or no symptoms.

Note: I bolded the above mental health problem.

In my opinion, its complex and can be associated with the school closures (lack of social interaction), fears that developed after seeing a family member die from Covid, lack of access to mental health professionals because many states oddly decreased their funding for mental health during the Pandemic (e.g. Texas), and the increased involvement on social media for children/young adolescents of the Pandemic.

As expected the largest percentage of Long Covid cases are in Red States with the lowest vaccination rates and high obesity rates. The only surprise here is that this news story is brought to you by Fox.

Long COVID is highest in these states, says new CDC report
There are potential reasons for the regional variances, according to Dr. Marc Siegel, who weighed in on the new report
    https://www.foxnews.com/health/long-covid-highest-these-states-new-cdc-report

The effects of COVID are lingering longer among the residents of some states than others.

That’s according to the latest Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which tracks reported cases of long COVID throughout the U.S.

The highest prevalence of long COVID was found in West Virginia — where 10.6% of survey respondents reported experiencing long-term effects of the virus in 2022.

In Alabama and Montana, long COVID cases were reported by 9.8% of respondents.

Other states with long COVID cases exceeding 8% included North Dakota (9.3%), Oklahoma (9.1%), Wyoming (9.0%), Tennessee (8.9%), Mississippi (8.7%), Iowa (8.3%), South Dakota (8.3%) and Utah (8.3%).

Overall, 6.9% of U.S. adults reported ever experiencing long COVID, the report stated.

In general, the highest prevalence of long COVID was in the South, West and Midwest, with the lowest reported cases in New England and the Pacific.

Obesity and vaccines play a role, doctor says
Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center and a Fox News medical contributor, who was not involved in the CDC report, called for further studies into how long COVID is reported — including who reports it and the criteria they use to define their symptoms, which varies from region to region.

"Vaccine uptake clearly plays a role, as multiple studies have shown that at least three shots decreases the risk of long COVID significantly," he told Fox News Digital.

Underlying diseases represent another significant factor, Siegel pointed out.

"We know that obesity, for example, increases risk of severe COVID dramatically, and severe COVID correlates with persistent symptoms and long COVID," he said.

"In fact, obesity is the highest in the South and Midwest (over 35%)," noted Siegel, "and it is probably no accident that obesity is the highest in the country in West Virginia (41%), which also has the highest rate of long COVID."

    Data and limitations
The data for this report was gathered by phone from respondents who were at least 18 years old as part of the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a population-based cross-sectional survey, per the CDC.

The adults were all asked for their age, sex, previous COVID-19 diagnosis and whether they had ever experienced long COVID.

In gathering this state-specific data, the CDC said it aims to "inform policy, planning or programming to support U.S. adults experiencing long COVID."

There were some limitations associated with the study, the CDC noted.

"BRFSS did not capture treatment during acute COVID infection, time since COVID-19 illness or duration or severity of symptoms, which could influence the reported prevalence of long COVID," the agency wrote.

"In addition, information about COVID-19 vaccination was only available for a subset of jurisdictions and is not included in this report."

    What is long COVID?
Long COVID is a condition in which symptoms of the virus persist for an extended period of time, generally three months or more.

Those symptoms can include fatigue, respiratory symptoms and neurologic symptoms (sometimes referred to as "brain fog").

"Long COVID is still an ill-defined term, but for me, the most prominent features are persistent fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, cough, and rapid heart rate or arrhythmias," Siegel added.

Fox News Digital reached out to the CDC and the West Virginia Department of Health requesting additional comment.

As a reminder, I think it was you who mentioned it a while back late in the Pandemic that the statistics of COVID-19 deaths were much higher among Southern states & Red states & Rural communities in comparison to Blue states & Urban communities...

After adjustments, rural residents — no matter how near they lived to urban areas — were about 36% more likely than urban residents to die within 90 days after COVID-19 hospitalization.

Digging a little deeper within the vaccination rates...

Southern states and Red States have the lowest vaccination rates in comparison to the Blue States.

Continuing, rural areas of both states (red and blue) in comparison to urban areas...rural areas have the lowest vaccination rates.

Here are a few iconic cancer rate statistics that anti-vaxxers do not want to talk about:
    • Southern states (Red states) have higher cancer rates than Blue states even though Southern states have lower vaccination rates.
    • Southern states have higher cancer rates among non-smokers who live with a smoker even though Southern states have lower vaccination rates.
    • Southern states have the highest prevalence of cigarette/cigar smokers, lowest rates of residences with health/medical insurance, and are less likely to use cancer screening to catch early stages of cancer that could have prevented DEATH in comparison to blue states.
    • Southern states have the highest prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure in comparison to blue states. Some of the Southern states call it an epidemic.
Simply, anti-vaxxers prefer to vomit their conspiracy theories based upon VAERS which represents less than 1% of hundreds of millions of vaccinations. Yet, the anti-vaxxers have no explanation and do not want to discuss the raw facts...

They have no answer about why low vaccination areas have higher rates of cancer. The above facts should be reposted every time they blame vaccines for cancers.

Here's another interesting fact, the countries with the highest rates of vaccination (e.g. France) also have the lowest rates of Autism. Anti-vaxxers love to blame vaccines for Autism.
