This is not applicable to all patients, unfortunately, because it requires a bone marrow transplant and obviously finding suitable donors for all HIV-positive people out there would be impossible.
If they find a way to make it into a gene therapy though it may work.

  6. I am really happy to read that. HIV is an awful thing, that has take million of lives, including some of my close people. I hope that in the near future this ilness will be treated and will not bother the humanity anymore. Thank god, I am not infected, but a member of my family is. He had a contact with a infected person, and, unfortunately the test for HIV has shown a positive result, and he's life will never be the same.

Here's a good read, also relating to this story. I've come across this type of information many years back on a radio broadcast, i think it may have been NPR? But it's not surprising that this came about. I just don't understand why it took them so long to come up with a cure? I think if you do further research, the folks that had this gene go back to the early days of crossing over through the Carpathian mountains, migrating north into Europe and mixing in with the other groups. Also this gene is resistant to the Black plague and inflammatory conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis. Cheers
