Living large in South Florida

  1. Yeah, it's funny you mention that. One of my good trading buddies livea in outside of Kingston, ON. Humid in the summer he says, and cold in the winter, but nice people and low crime. Neighbors that are neighborly and help each other out. National healthcare and a country running a surplus economy, especially Alberta do to oil revenues.

It's funny talking to my Canadian relatives. The ask me in a nicer way WTF? What is wrong with America right now? Ok, enough of my soapbox, I don't want to get to off topic.

  2. There is a state I would like to visit. I was so close this summer while in Yellowstone. Next year I would like to check it out.

  4. Is that were you live 5P? Somehow I thought you were in TX? Vegas, no unless it were to learn to trade prop with the Brights. That would mean getting up even earlier than I am. Sand, tumbleweeds, cactus, and scorpions don't do it for me.

  5. south florida. there are those who love it and those who don't. if you search coral gables, coconut grove, aventura, kendal, pinecrest, south miami, you'll see more positive comments. boca raton is a thumbs up too.

  6. Yes I am in TX, but the more I go to Vegas the more I am ready to move there (out by Summerlin and the Red Rock Casino area....love it!).

...and to be done trading by 1:00 pm.....that would be great (I can handle early morning trading)!

  7. Red Rock, I could handle, and I looked into Summerlin, before moving to Denver, but the cost of housing is the same in Summerlin as SE Denver metro and prefer some trees and skiing, but to each his own.

  8. Yes....but no state income taxes in Nevada and the property taxes are low too imo. :)

The other thing I like about Las Vegas is the surrounding area....Utah and Lake Tahoe for Skiing, California for the ocean and other fun.

  9. Both TX and NV have no state income tax, but you know that. Besides TX housing is much cheaper than NV, just check realtor.com if you don't believe me. It's a bubble that is deflating IMO. My trading buddy lives right off the strip. Many high rise condos are just sitting unsold right now. Just wait about a year, then you can cherry pick what you want. Maybe Don Bright can chime in here on the local NV situation.

  10. I grew up and spent most my life in an edgy area of Chicago (Edgewater/Rogers Park), lived a year on the UPE and now I'm living in Ft. Lauderdale. I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment. I will say SoFla is a bit safer than the old days but Florida's always been creepy. I've found however that many places, including Vegas, New Orleans (even pre-Katrina) and DC are far worse than Miami.

That being said, those who best prosper in Miami are those from the crime ridden, pre-gentrified NYC of the 70's or those from Latin America. Miami-Dade is a quarter parts of Sau Paulo, Havana, Long Island and the Deep South. I like it.

It's a place where you can get a Ruben, a Cuban sandwich or a hoagie at three different Deli's on the same block. It's a place where swimming pools with elaborate tropical foliage can be used year round. It's a place for boaters. It's a place where you can drive with the top down in the middle of January on the way to Gulfstream Park or to dinner in the dining room of some kick ass art deco hotel.

The important thing to note is: South Florida from Kendall to Jupiter is basically two worlds, east of Federal Hwy 1 and west. If you look at east in a vacuum, it's just another wealthy, crime free urban play land. No different than West L.A.
