then not sure what the point is for this? companies are buying back left and right, isn't that the same as issuing share div?
No - a share dividend costs the company nothing other than the administrative paperwork involved. It's simply a dilutive event to the capital structure and the market reacts accordingly. A fairly useless thing for a company to do really. Seems to be popular with small banks and overseas companies.
Here is a list of tickers that paid stock dividends in the past calendar year: AEG AROW ATRO BCS BP CASH CETXP CNC CRESY FAT FFIN GTS HSBC LARK MDC NTIC PHG SHOO SNFCA SPSC TJX TOT VGR WRB Not exactly what you asked for, but might give you someplace to start from. My dividend database is not that great, so that list might not be exhaustive. Here is the query that produced the list above; select unique symbol from divs where exdate > '20180929' and paytype in ('STOCK','SCRPT') order by symbol; If you'd like me to run it farther back, or with more extensive output, let me know.
Since of stock dividends are of course entirely pointless in the normal course of business they are usually only done as some kind of one time machination to avoid a "takeover", as they call a buyout the current management doesn't want usually because they're fat and lazy and they'll lose their jobs. There are some other financial engineering reasons for it, pretty much none of them positive for shareholder value, so hopefully you're looking for these as short candidates!
Did you know a company can also pay stock dividends by handing out shares of an another company? https://www.arvopaperi.fi/porssitie...a-shares/116d9bc7-9b81-4121-b6d2-9822eb17ae5b
Again this is really a corporate action, in this case a partial spin-off of their ownership in another company.
Thanks all fort your input - food for thought, will look into the issue further. Kevin, I´ve just started looking at tickers on your list, first TJX and BP and just found cash dividends paid recently ?!?
That list was of stocks that paid any stock dividend in the last year. The list of stocks that paid a stock dividend and did not pay any cash dividends during the past year is much shorter: ATRO CETXP CNC CRESY GTS SNFCA SPSC Sorry for the confusion.
For my kids growing up and my wife's and my IRA's (Roth IRA's) we would buy and DRIP RVT and RMT. They will pay out in stock if you wish. Look at their history. The Royce family of stocks are still my families biggest holdings. Boring, but stable...Buy and hold. They find those value stocks that others pass over. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...-trust/xrvtx&usg=AOvVaw2nyBcZlNbJ9DCdFwTfkpeb
