$200k /year, give those guys a break, banksters do nothing and reap multi million bonus every year...at tax payer's expense.

I think it all depends on how much is given to the politicians. Industries such as banking, weapons and farming that have bankrupted America appear to be immune from the teaparty outrage. For a trading board the outrage appears misplaced. America is a capitalist system. It not what you deserve to get, it's what you negotiate. Who is to say saving a drowning person is not more valuable to society than a corn farmer making a fortune on ethanol subsidies.

It's 120k and only certain lifeguards in Orange county (Newport Beach), a heavy republican voting population in so Cal.

While I agree with the premise of the run away government here in CA, the first thought that came to my mind when watching this video is: I hope that guy doesn't get into the water here and have a problem ;)

There is so much public sector corruption and waste here, this is just the tip of the iceberg. This is a great state but it has lost its libertarian roots and has migrated over to the socialist scam artist side of things.

CA can be summed up by a situation a friend of mine was in. He was staunchly anti-gun. Finally some friends and I convince him to go shooting. 1 day of shooting later, the guy has a crazy twinkle in his eye. 2 weeks later he has 2 (CA legal) assault rifles (WTF?!?), a few handguns, etc.

We say "What the hell is this, we thought you were all anti-gun" and he says while he now loves guns, he is just against ANYONE ELSE having them.

That my forum readers, is CA in a nutshell. By all means make the world a leftist wet dream as long as it doesn't impact me!

I find all these generalities on California quite entertaining, but maybe folks that are not from this state should be reminded that Newport Beach is Reagan country and that the entire county (Orange) is 100% republican run. So enough of this leftist stuff, Newport Beach would be insulted.

Furthermore, Orange county is the only major county in California to have declared bankruptcy, again under Republican leadership.
Moral of the story: not everything is always what it appears to be.

  9. I think you (and Darwin) have never swam in the ocean. Occasionally a current comes along and sucks you out(something that doesnt happen in a swimming pool). These guys risk their lives because many people that are drowning will grab the lifeguards and pull them under just out of panic. You get a guy thats 250 pounds drowning and I dont care if you have a little floatation device...if he is fighting, he can very well pull you under.

35k per year is not worth it in my opinion.

  10. Again you miss one of the main points of the story. The guys actually saving people are getting $15 / hr. The "full time lifeguards" earning up to $200,000 / yr are "supervising" from behind a desk. It is a joke but not unusual in the public sector in CA. Why would you want to make an excuse for corruption?
