Manafort’s Lawyer Said to Brief Trump Attorneys on What He Told Mueller

WASHINGTON — A lawyer for Paul Manafort, the president’s onetime campaign chairman, repeatedly briefed President Trump’s lawyers on his client’s discussions with federal investigators after Mr. Manafort agreed to cooperate with the special counsel, according to one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers and two other people familiar with the conversations.

The arrangement was highly unusual and inflamed tensions with Mr. Mueller’s office when prosecutors discovered it after Mr. Manafort began cooperating two months ago, the people said. Some legal experts speculated that it was a bid by Mr. Manafort for a presidential pardon even as he worked with the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, in hopes of a lighter sentence.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, one of the president’s personal lawyers, acknowledged the arrangement on Tuesday and defended it as a source of valuable insights into the special counsel’s inquiry and where it was headed. Such information could help shape a legal defense strategy, and it also appeared to give Mr. Trump and his legal advisers ammunition in their public relations campaign against the special counsel’s office.

Mr. Manafort’s legal team had long kept Mr. Trump’s lawyers abreast of developments in his case under a joint defense agreement. Mr. Trump’s team has pursued such pacts as a way to monitor the special counsel’s inquiry. Mr. Giuliani said last month that the president’s lawyers had agreements with lawyers for 32 witnesses or subjects of Mr. Mueller’s 18-month-old investigation.

Donald Trump will meet one-on-one with Russia's Putin at G-20, Kremlin says
Their last encounter drew criticism after Trump sided with Putin against American intelligence agencies over 2016 election meddling.

MOSCOW — President Donald Trump will meet one-on-one with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the G-20 on Saturday, according to the Kremlin.

They will hold discussions in private at the summit in Buenos Aires before being joined by officials, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told the TASS state news agency late Wednesday.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's office recommends little to no jail time for Michael Flynn in exchange for assistance

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn provided "substantial assistance" in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, according to court papers filed Tuesday.

Prosecutors described Flynn's cooperation with federal prosecutors in a sentencing memo filed by Mueller that offered few new details of the Russia probe. Noting that Flynn met with Mueller's team 19 times, the memo says a sentence that includes no prison time is "appropriate and warranted."

"The defendant provided firsthand information about the content and context of interactions between the transition team and Russian government officials," reads the heavily-redacted memo.

The sentencing document says Flynn “has assisted with several ongoing investigations, including its probe of coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.” He took part in 19 separate interviews.

Among the matters on which Flynn has provided assistance to the government is an unknown criminal investigation, apparently separate from the collusion probe.

However, most of the details of Flynn’s cooperation with the special counsel’s office were blacked out in the memo.
