Leaving on a jet plane (or, how smart are you again?)

  1. You demonstrate again your inability to think in the abstract.

I filled in some of the blanks for you, simpleton...

Sorry dude. In your above scenario, the planes wheels AREN'T MOVING ANYWHERE!. They spinning and GOING NOWHERE.

The surface of the treadmill is MOVING east at (say) 5mph. To "match the speed" in the opposite direction, the wheels of the plane MUST BE MOVING 5mph TO THE WEST.

You're example doesn't meet the requirement of the stated problem.

    Geez.

  3. "the wheels of the plane MUST BE MOVING 5mph TO THE WEST"

you've ILL-STATED this problem, very unclear, no wonder everyone is having problems with it.

obvious that NOW you mean the "wheels" and the "plane proper" to be one and the same system of points! why even bring the wheels into it? simply say the "plane" itself GEEEEEZ

you get an "F" for physics 101. notes to student: state your problem with RIGOR, less ambiguity !!

  4. Well,that's troubling.

ZZzz and I agree that Turok isn't as smart as he thinks he is....

I need a Bloody Mary after that...

What I have stated (directly to you and on the record), is that it's not my problem -- I'm not the author, so if you have issues with it's wording, take it up with them.

If you want MY version of the problem, go to this thread.

In defense of the author, the wheels and the plane are fastened together pretty tightly -- that is to say that generally when a pilot goes to land he pretty much assumes that his wheels traveled the same distance and at the same speed as the rest of the plane. If he assumed that something other than that was possible (as you apparently do) he'd be pretty puckered up on every landing.

    >why even bring the wheels into it? simply
    >say the "plane" itself GEEEEEZ

Perhaps it was to weed out those folks who think that a planes wheels don't move right along with the plane -- who knows.

zTroll, did you know that the steering wheel of your car travels along the same path and at the same speed as the rest of your car?

    Just checking.

    Hey Ztroll,

    http://trisports.com/kinroadmactr.html

When guys warm up on one of these before a ride, did you know that their speed is actually ZER0? Turns out their wheels aren't going anywhere either.

    Freaky huh!!

    Ztroll,

    Here's a good one ...

    Pilot over intercom:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we know you have many choices when it comes to flying and we appreciate you choosing us.

We've arrived over San Diego, but will be circling for a bit while our wheels catch up to us. Once we manage to get our wheels back solid to our aircraft, we'll be landing.

Thank you for flying with us on here at We Defy Every Law of Physics Airline and have a good day.

  10. their wheel has a rotational velocity to it. the very center of the AXIS of the wheel is going nowhere but any point on the wheel OTHER than that is most certainly moving.

    i reiterate,
    what an idiot ! :p
