A million people died in the Civil War, by conservative estimates. Roughly 550,000 to 700,000 of these were deaths of soldiers. Not all of these casualties were on the battle field - many were due to festering wounds, causes such as cholera, influenza and dysentery, or malnutrition. The population of the U.S. at the time the Civil War was fought was around 30 million. So, both from a nominal and absolute standpoint, this was the deadliest war, by far, foreign or domestic, ever had by these United States.
Back in the day, I did some time for stupidity over at the "Main" jail in Santa Ana. At first they housed in me in a four man cell with some Vatos. I wasn't a banger so they didn't give me shit... just sat around and smoked sherms. Then they housed me in a tank that had about 100 inmates who's bunks were separated by a white line down the middle of room: Whites on one side, Mexis on the other. No Blacks. Blacks had their own tanks and could not/would not be housed with the general population. Mexis hate blacks, that's a given... well every race hates each other, some just tolerate better.
Hey bronks. Cool story! As "bad" as Mexican gangs can be, if a white guy is given a choice between living with predominately Mexicans or mostly blacks, the choice is clear. NO ONE can ruin a neighborhood-hell ruin a society-like black folks. Which is exactly why Mexicans hate blacks.
Yeah, another side-bar to that story is one of sheriffs there was the brother of one of my neighbor's and got me transferred. It was reputed to be the one of the more mellow tanks and I found out why. They had porn covering the showers wall protected by plastic film. There was an unwritten rule that although about 8 could shower at a time, only one went. There were guys showering all day long, save for chow and lights out.
There were guys showering all day long,............. I spent one night in jail but cops were nice enough to separate me from general population.LOL.
