Does anyone have up to date performance numbers for the Renaissance Technologies Medallion fund. I got the following from google searching but it only goes up to 2015. Does anyone know how this fund did in 2016 and 2017. Also if anyone has finer grained quarterly or monthly numbers going back however far i would be interested in seeing those as well. 1988 9% 1989 -4% 1990 56% 1991 39% 1992 34% 1993 39% 1994 70% 1995 38% 1996 32% 1997 21% 1998 41% 1999 25% 2000 99% 2001 33% 2002 33% 2003 27% 2004 29% 2005 33% 2006 51% 2007 86% 2008 98% 2009 47% 2010 34% 2011 37% 2012 29% 2013 47% 2014 40% 2015 36% 2016 ? 2017 ?
There were a couple of articles I found on the net when i collected this data a few months ago, but i didnt keep the links and cant find them now. But the bloomberg video on the following web page has a very clear chart showing yearly returns for medallion that match exactly my opening post above: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...-medallion-fund-became-finance-s-blackest-box Other pages are reporting the fund made 21% in the first half of 2016. That image above is indicating 25% for 2016 but it probably is not for the full year most likely just for the first 3 quarters of 2016 as the page is from November 2016. I found 11% for the first half of 2017 from another page dated second half of 2017. But i have yet to find an article that mentions full year returns for 2016 or 2017.
The fund is CLOSED to investors. It's now run privately just for the employees of Rentech! Mind you, these performances are AFTER super high fees of 5/40. Yep, you read that correctly. 5% on AUM and 40% of upside. The gross returns are really high! In some cases triple digits.
A guy named James Simons... ~80 years old now. Rumor(?) is that it's all done with HFT, "front-running" orders.
Beating these returns (even doing this consistently) is not impossible, but problems start when trading size. With size I mean a millions $ account.
